Breaking: CrossFit Announces Individual Semifinal Placements and Athlete Seeding Protocol
With one month remaining until Semifinal action kicks off this season, we now know the details surrounding individual athlete placement and seeding for the 10 Semifinal events. CrossFit made a formal announcement late Wednesday afternoon, revealing the full athlete rosters for each event.
One big thing: With North America being the only continent with multiple events to also hold live competition, the most important question was how athletes from North America would be placed in accordance with the constantly evolving restrictions globally. CrossFit included the following details in their explanation of the process:
“The top 10 male and female athletes in North America were given their first choice of Semifinal event,” and “based on this selection process, the overwhelming majority of athletes in North America were given their first or second choice of Semifinal.”
“Athletes living in the same state as an event were placed at that event (unless their first choice was elsewhere).”
“All athletes qualifying out of Canada and Mexico were placed in the online Atlas Games to accommodate travel restrictions related to COVID-19.”

Canadian Women Confident They're on the Rise
2016: That was the last year a Canadian woman finished in the top 10 at the CrossFit Games.
That woman was Alessandra Pichelli, who at the time was competing with an American flag next to her name. She placed ninth. Since then, Canadian women have had a number of top 15 finishes, but for the most part they haven’t been much of a force at the highest level of the sport.
Remind me: In 2017, Pichelli was, once again, the highest Canadian woman in 11th, and in 2018 the strongest Canadian finisher was Camille Leblanc-Bazinet — the only Canadian woman to ever podium at the Games when she won in 2014 — who placed 13th.
In 2019, Carolyne Prevost was the top Canadian in 12th, and last season the only Canadian woman on the Games roster was Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault, who placed 11th.
Furthermore, last year, only two Canadian women placed in the top 50 in Open total — Thibault and Prevost.
Who are the Major Players in the “Minor” Continents for Semifinals?
While the “Major” continents of North America and Europe wait to see how they will be distributed into the four and two respective Semifinal competitions, the “minor” continents do not have that stress.
All the qualifiers will participate in one Semifinal for their continent, with the opportunity to earn one of very few spots to the Games. Of the 38 athletes who will qualify directly from a Semifinal to the Games (two spots remain for the Last Chance Qualifier), 30 of them will come from North America and Europe. That leaves only eight spots from the other four continents; this article details who I believe are the most likely eight in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

G City CrossFit Owner Jenai Gonzales Wins Chalk Up Community Choice Award
To celebrate the start of the Open in March, we created the Chalk Up Community Choice Awards to honor one man and one woman that embody the spirit of the CrossFit Community. We received so many inspirational stories, but two of them stood out to our staff. Jenai Gonzales is our female honoree. The elements of her story that stood out to us included: her creating a truly inclusive gym, bringing her community together after a hate crime, and creating a specialized strength program for junior high and high school aged girls that helps foster self-confidence.
The details: Bellum Strength and Conditioning – G City CrossFit focuses on providing necessary services to the community, a list that includes workplace wellness programs, kids courses, fundraising events, and personal training for adaptive athletes. G City CrossFit also has a reputation as an inclusive place for youth and adult members of the LGBTQ community. There is a Pride flag outside the gym, and Gonzales welcomes every single person that enters the building with open arms, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or anything else.
