“Oh honey. CrossFit isn’t for you”

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition is fueled by KILL CLIFF ENDURE. This delicious new endurance sports drink was created by KILL CLIFF athletes like Sam Dancer, who called ENDURE the “best option” for refueling during tough WODs and competitions.

You can snag a 12 pack for $10 off with code “CHALK10” and try it for yourself.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You know what it takes to win. Just look at my fist. When I make a fist, it’s strong and you can’t tear it apart. As long as there’s unity, there’s strength.  We must become so close with the bonds of loyalty and sacrifice, so deep with the conviction of the sole purpose, that no one, no group, no thing, can ever tear us apart.” — Ara Parseghian

WHEN AN INSULT SPARKS A FIRE

What happened?
Think back to your first CrossFit class.

It’s safe to say you were probably nervous, maybe even intimidated. Now imagine being overweight, lonely, and suicidal, only to have your coach tell you during your first class “Oh honey. CrossFit isn’t for you”.

Oh, no he didn’t.
Oh yes, he most certainly did. That’s exactly what happened to 35-year-old Nerida Bint, from Newcastle, Australia.

So what did she do?
Spoiler alert — she left.

Every fire needs a spark and this was it for Nerida. She went on to shed 50 pounds and overhauled her entire life with a newfound sense of purpose and passion, quitting her six figure job and opening her own all-female gym (not CrossFit though — wonder why?)

Lissome, that’s her gym, now boasts 150 members who are all feeling nothing but love and encouragement regardless of their fitness level, as it should be.

ROUNDUP — You can now customize the Reebok Speed TR 2.0Colleen McNaught climbed Mt. Whitney, the tallest in the lower 48. Congratulations Maddy Curly on the lifetime clean and jerk PR. Jeff Evans won the Florida State weightlifting championships with a 321 pound snatch and 418 pound clean and jerk. Elijah Muhammad is moving to Iowa and will now compete in the Central Regional. Tim Paulson concocts a sick twist on DT, subbing out hang cleans and push jerks with hang snatches and overhead squats. Alex Vigneault did 17.5 with 135 pounds (instead of 95) and a heavy jump rope.

Words of advice from She Thrives…“I want you to do one thing that pushes you outside of your comfort zone.”

What to tell your friend who’s kids always complain about PE…

Someone should do something about that. Like Lehigh Acres Middle School in south-central Florida. Two P.E. teachers were insipred to get their L1 and incorporate CrossFit Kids into the curriculum. Over the summer they officially became an affiliate. So what do the students think? “I like it because you push yourself, and it paves a way to a journey of fitness…you can push each other. We’re all family,” one student said. They even have an after-school club just for teachers.

THINGS TO…

WATCH: Being Heavy and Ashamed
Not CrossFit, but this five minute video is P-O-W-E-R-F-U-L, and eye-opening for the routine struggles with body image that overweight people feel on a daily basis. We don’t often say this so take us at our word, this is a must watch.
TAKE 5.

HEAR: The Danger of Extremes
You know the scenario. Friend (or yourself) just joins CrossFit, immediately swags out hard in Reebok gear, starts doing paleo, two WODs a day and you can hear the shaker bottle bouncing around in their backpack walking in from work. The Nasty Girls Podcast talks about the danger of extremes and diving in a little too hard too fast and how to avoid it to train for the long run.

Omega-6 is the fatty acid usually found in nuts, seeds and grains and in commonly-used vegetable oils like sunflower oil. If you’ve ever been curious what other common foods are high in Omega-6, 180 Degree Health has made it easy for you.
