When you’re over the club…

So you want to celebrate your birthday with a bang. You love the idea of sweating it out under the lights at a club, but let’s be real. You’re busting ass in the gym regularly to get healthy and fit and the thought of pounding drinks and nursing a hangover just isn’t your cup of tea anymore.

We get it. We totally get it. And so does Caroline Jordan.

Her solution?

Caroline is a San-Fran based wellness coach who opted for a less traditional 31st birthday party. She rented out a club called City Nights and hosted a “Birthday Bootcamp”.

Picture a huge group fitness class with multiple stations on different stages. The party attendees squatted, lunged, and burpeed the night away under flashing lights and bass driven music- all without having to stress out over the perfect dress or pair of heels.

We’re all in.

It makes perfect sense, right? As CrossFitters we spend a large percentage of our free time in the box and a lot of our friends are there, too. Ring in your next birthday by celebrating (and sweating it out) with some friends and a birthday WOD.

What happened?

On Friday afternoon, the CrossFit Games Twitter account tweeted something interesting:

“What are your thoughts on known Regionals events so far?”

And your point is…?

The words “known” and “so far” are curious word choices when all the team and individual workouts have been released.

Dave Castro is well known for dangling the chord for CrossFitters. So the question is: coincidence or is there more coming?

Last year, there was much speculation around Dave adding a surprise seventh event at the last minute; something that never materialized, but we didn’t see a tweet like that.

“Earn The Weekend With A Gut Check” by Shane Trotter, Breaking Muscle

“Everybody’s working for the weekend!” I’m a millennial, so that is the only line that I know to this popular 80’s ballad. After that line, I just awkwardly hum the melody: “na na na na na na na.”



While the “working for the weekend” approach lacks the focus to spur sustainable fitness or occupational success, it is a wonderful strategy to bust through Friday malaise. I’ve found great power in using this concept as a challenge. Don’t just work for a day off, earn it! Regardless of your fitness plan, each week should feature a gut check, and there is no better time than during the final session of the week.

The gut check has merit. It is not simply a display of bravado to tickle the ego and justify a little Clint Eastwood swagger. The gut check trains discipline and resiliency, perhaps the most essential qualities for life success while eliminating the increasingly common expectation for convenience and comfort.
