How To Be a Good Open Judge: Don’t Coach, Uphold the Standards

We covered “How to be a Good Open Citizen” a few weeks ago, now we are going to give some advice on how to excel in one of the most crucial and underrated roles in the CrossFit season, specifically the Open, being a judge.

One big thing: By volunteering as an Open judge you are signing up to be a gatekeeper of the CrossFit Games, your decision-making and interpretation of the rulebook and movement standards are critical. The Open judge decides who will ultimately get the chance to move on to the next stages of competition with the hopes of earning a spot at the Games.

Poised for an Open Payday?

With the Open nearly here, there is one new feature of this year’s rulebook that has received minimal attention; section 1.39 lays out the “Open Cash Prizes for 2021:”

“In addition to weekly winners, at the conclusion of the Open, cash prizes will be awarded to the top individual men and individual women performers overall on the worldwide leaderboard.”

More specifically, the top 5 finishers worldwide will earn at least $5,000.

  • First Place: $15,000
  • Second Place: $10,000
  • Third Place: $7,500
  • Fourth Place: $6,000
  • Fifth Place: $5,000

Ben Cuentas: A Revolving Door of Physical Therapists Fails, CrossFit Coach Succeeds

In March 2018, Ben Cuentas went for a drive in a mountainous area in Fort Huachuca, AZ to hide things for a surprise St Patrick’s Day picnic he had planned for his wife and daughter. The next thing he remembers is waking up in the hospital with his wife holding his hand.

  • “I don’t know what happened, but I somehow drove off a cliff, flipped my truck a few times and (flew) through the passenger side window,” said Cuentas, now 37. “I was bleeding out from my leg. If it weren’t for a border patrol agent who happened to be riding his bike and saw me, I would have died. I was in a very inauspicious place.”

The details: Cuentas, who started CrossFit in 2008, was airlifted to Tucson and spent the next five days in the hospital. His injuries included a broken tibia, a lacerated liver and kidney, various torn ligaments in his knees, some broken ribs, a punctured left lung, and lacerations to the face.
