QUOTE OF THE DAY

“There may be people with more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you.” — Derek Jeter

Getting Sara’s Groove Back

This is a big weekend for Sara.

Amidst the buzz of the CrossFit Games Open, another Sanctional will be taking place, treating fans of the sport to a fitness filled weekend.

The task of taking on Open workout 19.1 plus six more events in just two days is stout, but for Sara Sigmundsdottir — an athlete with podium aspirations in 2019 — the importance of this weekend’s performance extend beyond just her placement on the leaderboard.

“I just wanna get my mojo back. It started a little bit in Miami (Wodapalooza) in the end,” revealed Sigmundsdottir, “Now I wanna have it back the whole weekend, not just the second half.”

On the path back.

After her 2018 Games were cut short due to a fractured rib, Sigmundsdottir has recovered and stayed busy working to get her mojo back on the competition floor.

This is her third sanctioned event in as many months on three different continents. She’s the only former CrossFit Games athlete who will have done three events in the lead up to the Open.

And so far her record is sound — third place overall finishes in both Dubai and Wodapalooza.

By the time competition closes on Sunday, Sigmundsdottir will have officially competed in more workouts (24), than she did in the entirety of the CrossFit Games season last year. Some might worry the wear and tear of competing so frequently this early in the season could be detrimental, especially to an athlete who suffered two straight rib injuries in less than a year.

Sigmundsdottir however, sees it much differently.

THE OPEN

With Four Days Left, Open Registration Numbers Down 44%

The preliminary Open registration numbers are in and registration is currently down 44%.

As of the first announced workout — 5:00 PM PT on Thursday — a little more than 280,000 total athletes had registered for the 2019 CrossFit Open across all divisions.

The paltry registration numbers so far raise red flags for a community which has undergone massive changes in the past seven months, affecting enthusiasm for the largest community event of the year. It also represents, currently, $4.4 million in revenue left on the table.

Ask her if she has any Momosas. Nope, that’s not a typo. That’s a real actual thing. A Girl Scout and her mother from Colorado came up with the ingenious idea to remake a few boxes of Samoas by putting a picture of a shirtless Jason Momoa on the front. They sold out instantly. (Duh.)

Viva La France — Julian Festor of Reebok CrossFit Louvre on how 19.1 went down in Paris: “The goal was to bring together athletes from different well know boxes close or in Paris. The location was near the bridge Pont Neuf, which is the oldest bridge in France built 450 years ago. The riverside of the Seine is where the first CrossFitters in paris started back in 2011 which is why we invited one athlete from each of the boxes founded by people who were there in 2011 to compete.”

CrossFit Italian Showdown Scores Due — All registered athletes must have their CrossFit Italian Showdown online qualifier score submitted by Saturday at 2:59 PM PT.

Reebok on the Nike Blowout — Zion Williams, a forward for Duke University, injured his knee when his Nike shoe ripped apart less than one-minute into the game. Tal Short, Sr. Product Manager for Reebok, responded to the blow out of their competitor’s shoe. “This is my biggest fear when building product. We test the Nano like crazy – but I spend the week of the CrossFit Games sweating through each workout hoping the shoes DON’T get noticed or talked about. The conversation should always be about the athletes. Our goal is never to be the story. Our goal is to build shoes that can perform up to the extreme levels that top tier athletes demand. It’s a fun challenge but always a risk.”

Ex-Affiliate Owner in Court — Last April, Matthew Krakowski, the owner of CrossFit Switch in Clinton Township, MI was arrested for placing a hidden camera in the ladies restroom. Yesterday he pleaded no contest to all 14 charges against him.

— The community came together in true CrossFit fashion to rebuild trust after Krakowski’s arrest. Two members of the gym purchased the business, rebuilt the community, and changed the name to CrossFit Platoon

Zen Planner Makes Inclusive Changes — Zen Planner, an athlete management suite used by affiliates, released two new product enhancements related to a broader effort to support the transgender inclusion movement: A ‘Not Specified’ gender option for building out athlete profiles and the ability to display a gender-neutral leaderboard.

…which is similar to what Wodify did last week

— From Will Lanier, Executive Director of The OUT Foundation, “Many companies talk of inclusion, but Zen Planner has put their money where their mouth is. Developing a gender-free athlete experience helps remove barriers that can make transgender and gender non-conforming athletes feel unwelcome in fitness. That’s why we’re proud to stand with Zen Planner as they launch their new ‘Not Specified Gender’ option.”

— Why now? Last August during the 2018 CrossFit Games in Madison, WI Greg Glassman announced that athletes will now be able to compete in whichever gender they identiy in. Broadening the leaderboard options in gyms is the first step to incorporating this change across the board.

“Can You Eat Your Way to Better Mental Health?” by Neel Ocean and Peter Howley, CNN

It is well known that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is good for your physical health, but our latest research suggests that it might be good for your mental health too.

A study from Australia in 2016 found improvements in psychological well-being after increases in fruit and vegetable consumption. We wanted to know if this finding held true using a larger sample (more than 40,000 participants) from the UK Household Longitudinal Study.

Our analysis showed that increases in the consumption of fruit and vegetables are linked to increases in self-reported mental well-being and life satisfaction in data that spans a five-year period, even after accounting for other determinants of mental well-being such as physical health, income and consumption of other foods.

he benefits of physical activity for mental health are well established. The estimates from our work suggest that adding one portion to your diet per day could be as beneficial to mental well-being as going for a walk on an extra seven to eight days a month.

One portion is equal to one cup of raw vegetables (the size of a fist), half a cup of cooked vegetables or chopped fruit, or one piece of whole fruit. This result is encouraging as it means that one possible way to improve your mental health could be something as simple as eating an extra piece of fruit every day or having a salad with a meal.
