QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.” — Carl Rogers.

RAW WATER, CALIFORNIA’S NEWEST HEALTH CRAZE.

Come again?

There’s no denying the plethora of health crazes that have popped up in trendy cities across California over the last couple of years — matcha mania, pre-packaged bone broth, avocado EVERYTHING, butter coffee…you name it.

Well 2018 is already dishing out some entertainment for us in the form of raw water.

Raw water?

It’s exactly what it sounds like: “unfiltered, untreated, unsterilized spring water” and it’s becoming stupidly popular in San Francisco’s Bay Area.

If raw water’s definition sounds like you just dunked a gallon jug underneath a waterfall and took a giant swig then you’re correct: that’s exactly what it is and it retails for $36.99 for 2.5 gallons at select Bay Area grocery stores (that is if you can find it in stock.)

Companies like Live Water and Zero Mass are pioneering this movement in an effort to eliminate the worries of lead, chloramine, and fluoride that’s added to city water.

Is that safe?

That depends on who you talk to. Experts say raw water may contain minerals, but you can get the minerals you need from a healthy diet. On the other hand, raw water runs the risk of some known and not so friendly bacteria like Giardia and E. coli.

We get it. Bottled water is controversial and paleo is so in right now, but be smart people.

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

What to tell your friend who’s New Year’s Resolution was to not make excuses…

What are you doing January 31? Wanna go for a run? You’re free! That’s awesome, cause Ragnar and REI are co-hosting the “No Buts Night Run,” a fun way to get people out of fitness hybernation, have a lotta fun and raise money for the American Hiking Society, the only national organization that promotes and protects foot trails, their surrounding natural areas, and the hiking experience. They’re donating $1 (up to $10k) for every runner who sign-ups. Grab a buddy, cause fitness is funner when you’re not a lone
runner.

What to tell your hubby who’s always bragging about being the stronger sex…

Not against the “man flu”. A new study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that flu sumptons in men are often more severe. Dubbed the “man flu”, the study monitored the seasonal influenza for six seasons in Hong Kong and a decade in the United States and found that men had higher rates of flu-related deaths than women. The ‘Doc’ leading the study suggested it might be because of all that extra testerone floating around, or maybe it’s cause they won’t go get a shot.

“I Have Found My Cure for My Chronic Disease” by Hilary Achauer, CrossFit Journal

Daniel Trejo’s doctor called him into her office three months after prescribing a triple cocktail of medicine to address issues with blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

When 47-year-old Trejo had first visited her in February 2017, his A1c levels were 9 percent, which put him in the diabetic range.

The hemoglobin A1c—glycated hemoglobin or HbA1c—test measures the percentage of red blood cells with a sugar coating. People who have more sugar in their bloodstream will have a higher percentage. Typically used for monitoring diabetics, the A1c test measures the average blood sugar for the past two to three months. A normal A1c number is between 4 and 5.6 percent.

At 5 foot 11 and 210 lb., Trejo was not obese, but his high blood sugar and cholesterol were a problem. He felt sluggish and weak. His blood pressure was normal, but doctors often prescribe blood-pressure medication to help prevent kidney disease in diabetics.
