Colorado Gym Owners Go the Extra 26.2 Miles Amidst a Global Pandemic

Colorado Gym Owners Go the Extra 26.2 Miles Amidst a Global Pandemic

When Erica Erickson walked through the doors of Widespread CrossFit in Broomfield, CO two years ago, she was out of shape, suffering from poor sleep, and her stress level was “out of control,” she said.

Understandable, considering the now 43-year-old had been raising two sets of twins and working a full-time job.

Though apprehensive about starting CrossFit, something about the way gym owner Matt Kirkendall spoke to her on her first day made her feel comfortable.

  • “Right away, I was like, ‘Let’s do this,” Erickson said.

She knew that Matt and his wife Kari Kirkendall were the ticket to changing her life, she added.

Two years later, this has proven true: Through their guidance, Erickson has regained her health and happiness and has discovered a newfound confidence in herself, which led her to believe she could run a marathon, something that had been on her bucket list for 10 years.

  • “They helped me find myself again,” she said.

At the end of last year, Erickson sat down with Matt to put together a training plan to prepare her to run her first marathon. She selected a local marathon that was set to run on Sunday, June 7.

No surprise, like most other public events these days, her marathon was eventually canceled because of COVID-19.

  • “When I found out it was canceled, I posted something on social media about how sad I was,” Erickson said.

Two hours later, Kari sent her a message.

  • “I have an idea. I want to put on this race for you. You have been training so hard and we don’t want to see all the hard work you have put in go by the wayside,” Erickson said of what Kari told her.

Australian Affiliates Begin Re-Opening on Short Notice

Australian Affiliates Begin Re-Opening on Short Notice

In the same fashion gyms in the Australian state of Queensland were given just 24 hours notice to close 10 weeks ago, they were given the green light by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Sunday that they could reopen by midday Monday (AEST)

Talk about a logistical nightmare: Stage Two of easing restrictions was scheduled to begin on June 12, but the Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles said it had been bumped up.

Gyms were able to re-open starting Monday at midday with a maximum of 20 people in each section, which is subject to increase if affiliates submit a “COVID-safe” plan.

  • CrossFit Neuro’s Jo Johnson wrote to her members: “We are super excited to announce that from this Tuesday… in 2 sleeps time…. we will be running our classes inside again!”
  • CrossFit Dux’s Gregg Wilson also shared the excitement: “Stage 2 has been moved forward by 2 weeks… We are PUMPED!”

On such short notice: Affiliate owners thought they had another two weeks up their sleeves, and we’re hearing a lot of Queensland gyms choosing to delay reopening by half a day, to ensure their facilities are ready for the first class on Tuesday morning.

Elsewhere around Australia and New Zealand:

  • In New South Wales, gyms will reopen on June 13, along with yoga studios and indoor pools. Classes will be capped at 10 people, with a maximum of 100 people per venue.
  • Gyms have already been allowed to reopen in the Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia.
  • It’s also the situation in New Zealand with gyms now reopened.
  • In South Australia gyms can open on June 8 with a maximum of 20 people, likewise in the state of Victoria where boxes can come back on June 22.
  • Tasmanian affiliates are also planning to reopen on June 15.
