REGIONALS WEEK 2

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

The competition kicked off yesterday in Australia. With two events already down, the leaderboard is shaping up nicely. Tia Toomey and Kara Webb are trading first and second place finishes, and Alethea Boon looks to be 100% after her achilles injury as she sits in third. Ricky Garard, who missed out on the Games last year by one spot sits in 6th. Three male athletes have withdrawn so far. With a time of 14:50.95, Rob Forte beat the Event 1 record set by Mathew Fraser last weekend.
We took a look at the six athletes who placed sixth at the 2016 Pacific, California and Central Regionals and where they’re at today. Tommy Marquez’s five things to pay attention to at the Pacific Regional. Dan Bailey is back for another shot at qualifying for the CrossFit Games, this time in the Central Regional. Keep a close eye on Becca Voigt who is working to secure her 10th trip to the CrossFit Games. CrossFit HQ put together this preview of California and Central and the teams to watch at the Central, California and Pacific Regionals. CrossFit Mayhem probably has the best outfits of any team competing this weekend. This is how athletes are measured for the red rep lines on the ring dips in Event 2.

NUMBER OF THE DAY — 166.5: The average number of points the 20 East and South Games qualifiers accumulated after two events. It’s 169.6 for Teams.

Evanston’s Economic Development Committee voted to grant the yet to be opened Sharp Edge CrossFit a $50,000 forgivable loan to renovate an old auto repair shop. Sharp Edge CrossFit is owned by Netanya Mintz, the same woman who tried to open her affiliate in nearby Skokie, IL but ran into problems with their zoning department. When Skokie closed the door to her idea, Evanston told Mintz to check out their town.

“Sick of Silver: Tia-Clair Toomey Wants to Win” by Brittney Saline, CrossFit Games

“This is about crushing the people next to you, and this is about trying to win the fucking CrossFit Games,” Dave Castro, Director of the CrossFit Games, said at the dinner that kicked off the 2016 Individual competition. “If you’re not coming for that reason, you should just quit now.”

Tia-Clair Toomey, who took second in 2015, listened quietly. “Personally, I never wanted to come to the CrossFit Games to win it. I just wanted to be there, you know?” she said during a Skype call two weeks before the 2017 Pacific Regional.

By the time the week was over and she’d taken second again—losing the title Fittest Woman on Earth to defending champion Katrin Davidsdottir by just 11 points—she’d come around to Castro’s way of thinking.

As she drove down the StubHub Center’s palm-lined boulevard for the last time on Sunday night, she turned to Shane Orr, her fiancé and coach. “What do I need to work on?” she asked him. “Because I want to win the CrossFit Games next year.”

“People Told Me Deadlifting 70kg When I Was Pregnant Made Me A Bad Mother, But It Was The Right Choice For Me” by Emily Breeze

This is my son Bly Rhunar Watson. We just celebrated his first birthday. He loves to climb the stairs, make motorboat noises, call his fur brothers ‘doggle’, listen to music, run and hide when you chase him, play with his friends at Sunday school and laugh when you tell him “no”. Above all else, he’s a happy, healthy little boy.

When I was pregnant with Bly, a lot of people told me he wouldn’t be the healthy baby he is today. During my pregnancy, countless messages and comments flooded my Instagram and Facebook accounts on a daily basis. I had never met most of these people who told me I was hurting my baby and that I was already a careless mother.

When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to continue my normal routine for as long as possible. Pregnancy can be a scary time because your body goes through so many new changes, so I knew it would help me mentally, physically and emotionally to continue training and keeping my life as normal as possible. I talked with my doctor and found out which movements were safe for me and my growing baby. Above all else, I listened to my body on a daily basis and adjusted my workouts accordingly.
