QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Passion will outperform drive every time, because passion breeds a bulletproof level of resilience.” — Ben Bergeron, Chasing Excellence

THOSE ARE NOT THE NANO 8.0s YOU’RE LOOKING FOR.

In a galaxy far far away.

Reebok came out with a shoe called the Nano 7.0 and it wasn’t that popular. The duel-density midsole had been in every Nano since the 3.0 and allowed for a more firm heel and flexible toe box, which is great for the constantly varied demands of CrossFit: box jumps, double-unders, running and Olympic lifting. In the 7.0, Reebok replaced that midsole with a single-density midsole, which made the shoe very inflexible and stiff, better for lifting but not stuff like double-unders.

Some people loved it, some people hated it. It wasn’t their greatest shoe. Let’s move on.

So what happened next?

The made a new shoe, correcting the single-density error and announced a pre-release for December 18, inviting CrossFitters to customize their own pair for 24 hours. Customers began receiving orders this week, except there was a little problem.

What’s the problem?

The customized Nano 8.0s that were shipped out arrived with the Nano 7.0 midsole and on the shoe itself it reads Nano Weave, where it should read “Nano Flexweave.” So basically a customized Nano 7.0 Weave. And people were pretty upset, especially since when they contacted Reebok about the issue, their support team didn’t seem to have any idea what had happened.

“I do apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing with receiving the wrong mid-sole in your shoe. I will forward this information to my higher up and you will receive a contact back in 3-5 days about a solution,” one purchaser was told in an email from Reebok.

How did no one catch that?

We’re scratching our heads a little. We asked Joel Te who runs As Many Reviews As Possible, who had his hands on the original and correct prototypes that Reebok sent him, and he pointed out that all the promotional images of Dave Castro’s Nano 8.0s showed the 7.0 midsole. Even worse, those images were taken at and around the CrossFit Invitational back in early November.

But here’s what we do know: the Nano 8.0 went on sale at the CrossFit Store late Wednesday night. Reebok is aware of the issue and taking steps to correct it:

“We’re in the process of contacting everyone impacted to let them know the circumstances, and – while everyone will still be receiving the shoes they ordered – we will be giving them a voucher for a free pair of shoes from the YourReebok platform. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for choosing the Reebok CrossFit Nano 8 Flexweave to help power through their WODs in the year ahead!”

So if yours arrive and they feel a little off, now you know why.

COFFEE BREAK CONVERSATIONS

What to say when you show up unannounced at your friend’s house…

Surprise, kinda like what the CrossFit drug testing crew said to Rich Froning and Mathew Fraser on December 28. They showed up unannounced in Cookeville and wanted a little sample. Thankfully it all came back negative

What to tell your friend who saw that a 61-year-old grandfather just made the BU golf team…

Age is just a number, and apparently it’s not a requirement. Don Byers was playing a round of golf with the head coach of the Bellevue University golf team, when a “you should play on our golf team” joke turned into a reality. Basically a million decades ago, Byers lost his baseball scholarship due to an injury and dropped out of college. The CEO of Byers Insurance Agency, literally just enrolled back in and became one of the oldest college athletes in the United States in recent history. The best part is, the entire team does CrossFit pre-season so Byers is sore AF right now but at least his golf game is on point.

THINGS TO…

WATCH: The Making of an Amazon

By now, everyone has heard that Brooke Ence played an Amazon warrior in both Wonder Woman and Justice League. DC Comics goes behind the scenes on set to take a look at the months of Physical training and choreography these two dozen women underwent to become Amazon warriors.

DON’T MESS WITH AN AMAZON.

HEAR: Exploring Rejection and Intimacy in Dating

Amy and Olivia from the Nasty Girls Podcast sit down to discuss dating, how to become your authentic whole self instead, connection, empathy, rejection what those all look like in your relationships.

DON’T SWIPE RIGHT FOR LOVE.

EAT: Breakfast of Champions

After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Nom Nom Paleo serves up two delicious recipes that can be eaten together: The Sunny Side Salad and Cold Matcha Latte.

TIME TO FUEL UP.

Today’s edition of the Morning Chalk Up is fueled by

CHALK UP COMMUNITY

  • MEMORIAL WOD — Officer Daniel McCartney was a Pierce County Sherrif’s deputy in Washington state who was gunned down on Monday. Officer McCartney was also a coach at CrossFit Yelm, and his community is coming together on January 20th for a memorial WOD and fundraiser to support his wife and three boys.
  • GOT CPR? — Gladsaxe CrossFit in Herlev, Denmark, incorporated a little CPR into last Friday’s WOD. One of their coaches works as an EMT so we guess he must have driven the work truck — AKA ambulance — to CrossFit that evening.

“Nutrition Does Not Equal Weight Loss” by Paleo University

We are now a couple of days into the New Year and often this time of year people choose to do a “nutrition challenge” or try a new “diet” or just generally want to try approach their life/food in a different way. Because of that I want to talk about something that often gets confused: nutrition and weight loss.

Nutrition is often equated with weight loss and when people hear the word “nutrition” they think that the sole or primary goal is weight loss. But that is a HUGE misconception.

Focusing on better nutrition may, sometimes, mean that a person loses weight. But sometimes it means a person gains weight; or has no significant weight change at all but normalizes bowel function; or improves mental clarity; or lessens systemic inflammation. The list goes on.

By continuing to equate nutrition with weight loss we put people at a disadvantage. Say you don’t need to lose weight and you think that nutrition is all about weight loss, then why would you bother with better nutrition? That’s not for you, that’s for people who need to lose weight. But since nutrition is bigger than weight loss, you would miss out on all of the (arguably more important) other benefits of a better approach to nutrition.
