“Move fast. Move smooth. Move often. Most of all, just move.” — Dr. Justin Brown, owner of CrossFit Vice

QUICK BRIEF

Things you need to know.

So what’s happening in Brazil?

Apparently Brazilian truck drivers have had it with the rising price of fuel and decided to go on strike Thursday, barricading roadways and making it literally impossible to get equipment to the Arena Carioca in Rio De Janeiro. But because the CrossFit community is such a giving community, local affiliates drove in supplies like rowers and Assault Bikes late Thursday.

How’s that playing out?

So far, athletes modified Event 1 by running outside instead of on the Air Assault Runner. They also performed push-presses instead of the bench press in Event 2 because they didn’t have any benches or the Rogue benches.

Only half of the handstand walk obstacles made it so Team Event 1 will only had one stretch with the obstacle, and the second stretch was flat without an obstacle.

TBD on whether that’s the case for individuals in Event 3 today but it appears likely.

For those who complain that this is unfair because they’re not doing the exact same events.

First off, it doesn’t actually matter, and here’s why: everyone in the Latin America Regional is taking the same test. It doesn’t matter if they didn’t do the same workout as those in Europe or the South or West.

Secondly, back in the early days of CrossFit Regionals the events weren’t standardized across all Regionals anyways.

Quick Roundup

  1. After just one pull on his rower during Event 1, Johnny Medina’s handle broke off so they had to (quickly) bring in a replacement rower. He ended up finishing 30th in that event with a time of 41:47.
  2. All individual event records stayed intact, but Code 3 San Diego and CrossFit Mayhem broke the Event 1 and 2 records. Here’s where you can track all worldwide event records
  3. Margaux Alvarez won the South Regional then she came down to SoCal and won a strict pull-up challenge just for fun. She hit 19…maybe 20 unbroken
  4. Three of the top five females in the West are relatively unknown. Ehea Schuerch (3rd) has only been doing CrossFit since 2016, Kelcy Ware (2nd) has been to Regionals but never placed better than 24th, and Hayley Murillo (5th) has been a team athlete for the past three years.
  5. Mathew Fraser racked up his 16th career Regional victory yesterday.
  6. The West Regional has 13 former Male Games athletes and 11 females vying for five spots to Madison.
  7. LOLOL…Brent Fikowski’s water bottle exploded while taking a sip during Event 1.

SURPRISE. SURPRISE.

Who’s up, who’s down.

Who’s up.

Brooke Wells, 1st overall, Central: Brooke Wells is not known for being a great runner, and she took second in Event 1, only 40 seconds slower than Kristi Eramo who is a phenomenal runner. That paired with a 1st place in Event 2 and Brooke had a very good first day.

Bear Republic, 4th overall, West: After qualifying then getting DQed last year, Bear Republic is back in contention for a second chance at making it to Madison.

Who’s down.

Tia Wright, 27th, West: This is Tia’s seventh Regionals. In the 2016, she placed 7th and in 2017 she took 6th. But two bad performances yesterday have sent her way down. It’s not impossible, but she has to place in the top 5 across the board if she wants to have a chance.

Casey Campbell, 22nd overall, West: The merging of the West and California Regionals has not been kind to the three-time Games athlete, who finds herself in the back twenty after day 1.

Scott Panchik, 15th overall, Central: Scott is CrossFit’s Mr. Consistency. There’s a strong likelihood that this number will go way down by the end of today but worth noting. P.S. His younger brothers Saxon and Spencer are 23rd and 37th, respectively.
