Sara Sigmundsdottir Withdraws

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. It’s the last day of the 2018 CrossFit Games. Today’s edition was built by Working Against Gravity, the Official Nutrition Sponsor of the Morning Chalk Up.

The right nutrition is the difference between one more set and going home cranky. WAG coaches offer up our top 50 macro-counting tips for free.

8 Stories You Don’t Want to Miss

Today is the final day of the 2018 CrossFit Games, and as much as we’re really sad this is the end, it’s been an amazing event so far. Here are a few of our favorite stories from Day 4:

  1. Inside the numbers. Tia-Clair Toomey is 114 ahead of second place, and Mat Fraser is 138 points ahead. Traditionally, there are three events on Sunday and coincidentally there are three on the schedule, though two are still unknown. That means there are 300 points up for grabs and Fraser would only have to average 12th and Tia 9th in order to win the CrossFit Games.

FUN FACT: Statistically speaking, no male athlete currently below sixth place can possibly win the CrossFit Games at this point. For females, no athlete below 8th can win.
  2. Chaos is definitely a first. Chaos, which was kept a secret until athletes took the field, was definitely a new event this year and also introduced a new apparatus. Chaos was a chipper of ski erg calories, burpees to a strap, single arm overhead squats, pistols, box jump overs, and the Slug. The judge told each athlete the movement, but not the reps needed, just to keep putting in the work until told to stop. The final movement brought us the Slug, a rolling tumbler filled with 300 pounds of sand for the women and 400 pounds for the men. Katrin Davidsdottir made easy work of the course for her second event win for this week. It was the first event win this week for Pat Vellner, who overtook Khan Porter on the box jump overs. The first to get to the Slug, Vellner pulled unbroken to the end. Mat Fraser, who entered this event as the overall leader, finished only 6/10th of a second before Brent Fikowski for 9th.

FUN FACT: There were two sets of brothers on the field for Chaos today. Because all the male athletes competed at the same time, both Saxon and Scott Panchik and Ben and Alec Smith were competing against each other in the same heat.

FUN FACT #2: Because not every athlete speaks English, a udge was assigned who spoke their native language so there wasn’t any confusion on the field.

  3. What’s to come Sunday. We only know one of three events coming today, a 5-round run, bike, sled pull. Everything else is secret, but a quick look at the schedule shows that 8 minutes are alloted for the first event and 14 for the second. They are not back-to-back events according to the schedule.

  4. Sara Sigmudsdottir withdrew. “Prior to the start of Event 10, Sara Sigmundsdottir withdrew from the 2018 CrossFit Games for medical reasons, according to staff. According to her manager, she suffered a rib fracture. “Early on in the competition something happened and my ribs got really sore and bruised,” Sigmundsdottir said. “I was in a bit of denial and decided to tough it out. In the ‘Marathon row’ the pain went away as soon as had hit 10 km, so I thought this couldn’t be that bad. Afterwards the pain got so much
    worse.”

  5. Annie Thorisdottir’s heart arrhythmia flared up during Chaos. About five reps into her box jumps, Annie’s heart race shot through the roof and she had to back off. Apparently she’s had a heart arrhythmia since she was a teenager but it’s never flared up during competition before. She’s OK though and currently sits 86 points out of 3rd place.

  6. Moment to rewatch. When you’re last, you’re cheered the most; that’s the CrossFit Games. Jared Enderton was ready to call it a day but the fans and the athletes wouldn’t let him give up.

  7. Emily Bridgers says goodbye to CrossFit. “I knew at the end of the 2017 Games that this would be my last year. You’re not just quitting a job and walking out of an office. My job as a competitive athlete is also a lifestyle, and that lifestyle provides me with so many relationships. It’s a big change. I’ve spent this last year mentally preparing. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about stepping away, but I am just as ready to leave as I was to start. And that’s the difference this time. I’m ready to start the next chapter of my life.”

  8. Meredith Root and Frederik Aegidius on just making it. “‘Shit. Not again.’ Frederik Aegidius had just finished sixth at the 2018 Europe Regional, missing Games qualification by one spot. It was his fourth near miss in almost as many seasons, and the feeling was getting old. One week after Aegidius left the Velodrome with neither medal nor belt, Meredith Root took sixth in the West. Though she too had missed Madison by a single spot, it was the best of her three Regional performances to date. She took a week off to celebrate with surf and sun in West Palm Beach, Florida. Less than three weeks before
the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games, the emails arrived.”

…More fun facts.

FUN FACT: Kristi Eramo ran the Boston Marathon in 2010 with a time of 3:10:39.

FUN FACT #2: Both Kristi Eramo and Tia-Clair Toomey beat all male athletes in the Madison Triplus event.

FUN FACT #3: Only three athletes — Courtney Haley, Kara Saunders, and Willie Georges — were able to win their heats back-to-back in Bicouplet 1 and 2. Atheltes had only a minute transition time between the two events.

FUN FACT #4: Rich Froning’s time in the team bicouplet relay would have placed him 9th in the individual men’s division.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE.

Who’s Up, Who’s Down

Who’s up.

Laura Horvath, 2nd, 814 points — Laura lost the overall lead after Day 1, but she’s maintained second place through the rest of competition. With only a few events left, she’ll be fighting Kara Saunders for second place.

Kari Pearce, 6th, 674 points — Not likely in a podium position, but Kari has quietly rose up the leaderboard a little each day.

Willy Georges, 6th, 650 points — Going into the final day of competition, the rookie from France is only 54 points out from a third place podium spot.

Who’s down.

Ben Smith, 16th, 498 points — After a few lackluster performances in recent years, this was supposed to be Ben Smith’s big comeback year. Instead, he’s been wildly inconsistent, performing well in one event then in the bottom half on the next.
