CHALK UP READS
Do you want to get healthier and stronger? The kids at the Garden City Middle School sure do. Every morning on Mondays and Wednesdays our school has an early morning intramural CrossFit program. The bravest kids in the school are at the weight room door ready to rumble at 7:30 a.m. CrossFit is a meaningful, measurable and, most importantly, fun way to work out and get stronger.
I have been going to the Kids CrossFit program, which started three years ago, for a few months and I absolutely love it. I feel healthier and stronger than I ever have. So, you’re probably asking yourself, what does it look like? Let me tell you. When you first walk in your heart will jump out of your chest. Rings, weights, treadmills — they have it all and that’s not even the best part. Is that music I hear? Of course it is. You can’t work out without music. Oh, and don’t forget the awesome Mr. Michael Tullo. Mr. T is in charge of the program. He went through loads of training to get a coaching and CrossFit kids certification, and let me tell you it paid off. Medicine ball slams, tuck-ups, sit-ups, curls, oh my.
On my way to pick up baby Harvey after work last week, I saw a woman walking up the steepest part of 300 South as it nears the University of Utah. She had a happy (not small) baby strapped to her chest, legs dangling, and she was pushing a large (presumably not light) stroller carrying a larger kidlet in front of her. It had to have been between 50 and 75 pounds of extra weight she was moving, and she was barely breaking a sweat.
She might have been on her way somewhere, or maybe just out for a high-power workout (she’d have no need for CrossFit or pilates) — I don’t know. But she was fierce and I darn near wanted to pull over and give her a hoot and a high-five.
For some reason (perhaps my own realization that I’m sometimes a jerk to myself), I wondered if she sees herself the way I saw her.
