QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I have no trouble with someone who strives to be the best and finishes in the middle of the pack. There’s honor in that. I don’t see that person as a failure. To the contrary, he will come to the end of his days with a smile on his face, because he spent the time and talent God gave him having a ball, finding out how good he could get.” — Dr. Bob Rotella, “How Champions Think”

Carleen Mathews reflects on seven-year anniversary of beating her eating disorder…”7 years ago today I graduated from treatment for my eating disorder. I can’t say that everyday is easy, and I can’t say there are not really hard days body image wise, but everyday I make a choice to choose recovery and fight against what my head, media or society tells us to believe.”

BEN BERGERON SHARES HIS TOP 10 MOMENTS FROM THE GAMES…

#6Heavy 17.5...”It was the first time the CrossFit Games had retested an Open workout…and the heavier barbell was a nice touch. Back in the athlete area, I told Katrin that Heavy 17.5 for her was going to feel like regular 17.5 felt for me.

…After the announcement, I jogged over to the coliseum (there was practically no cell service in the athlete area) to rewatch Mat’s 17.5 video on YouTube. His splits were insane: he averaged :37 per round back in March. Then he took the floor for Heavy 17.5 and averaged :49 seconds a round. With an extra 30# on the barbell, Mat went only :12 slower per round. Animal.”

STORY SERIES: How has CrossFit helped you achieve a goal?

“In 2011, I was cut by the committee who selected the team that would represent the US in Italy at the 2011 Beach World Championships. I had, for 3 years prior, been cut from LA’s elite ultimate team (on which I desperately wanted to play). I offered no value on the field and I was not improving. In 2012, I found CrossFit and I began to understand how to train effectively. In 2015, I made the team that I had been cut from in 2011. We went to Dubai, and we won gold at the 2015 Beach World Championships.” — Remy Schor, Paradiso CrossFit Venice in Venice, CA

WHAT TO TELL YOUR TEENAGER WHO’S APPLYING TO COLLEGES…Where’s the closest box to campus? The University of Delaware just expanded their current fitness facility and opened UD CrossFit, which will be an official affiliate fully stocked and staffed by full-time L1 coaches, not student volunteers. The campus’ fitness director Christine Pena noticed that many students who were members at gyms back home, came to UD and couldn’t get find a box close by or afford the prices so she decided to offer an affiliate on campus at significantly reduced rates for students and staff. We’re giving that an A+.

The Bartz Brigade, or so they call themselves, exists to help raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. Last weekend they gathered at Black Powder CrossFit in Dallastown, PA for a fundraiser named after Bartz’s son who killed himself two years ago. The event raised $7500 for suicide prevention.
