“When you don’t feel like doing the work, just remember how you’ve gotten the results that you like to see.” — Jodie Kostryk

Surprise, Your Coach is Out Sick and Mat Fraser is Filling In

This is one time you really hope you didn’t decide to hit the snooze button and go back to sleep. Thursday at 7:15 AM, 14 athletes at CrossFit Lutèce were standing around waiting for their coach who was running late.

…then in walks Mathew Fraser. Not Matthieu Frasér, a 5’ 7” shaved head doppelgänger, but four-time Fittest Man on Earth, destroyer of WODs, the actual Mathew Fraser. And he was there to coach the workout before heading over to the Eiffel Tower for a photoshoot and some interviews.

The workout

20 minute EMOM (40 on, 20 off)

10 Cal concept 2 bike damper 10
Into max jumping air squats

9 Dumbbell deadlift
7 Dumbbell cleans

5 Dumbbell front squats
Max STO in remainder

10 cal row
Max burpees over erg

Rest

So why’s he in Paris? Fraser’s doing some promotional work with Nike in the lead up to the Fittest Freakest Challenge in February. Word is Nike will be dropping a country-wide challenge with the chance to win VIP passes to the Freakest Challenge in February. Rumor is Fraser will be back at the competition next year.

The Stress Of Supporting A Spouse From The Sideline

If you thought you suffered workout anxiety during the 2020 CrossFit Open, imagine the stress of watching your beloved chase down some of the top scores on the worldwide leaderboard.

Matt Saunders is a decent affiliate-level CrossFitter in his own right, but this year his top priority was riding the emotional rollercoaster, watching wife Kara Saunders edge into the Top 20 worldwide.

“The first week started off pretty chilled, because we didn’t really expect much going into it and you know, week one came out and I saw her score and I was like ‘Ah! This is going to be good,” he told the Morning Chalk Up.

“From then as each week’s gone … I guess it’s the same just more and more stress that’s kind of built up.”

Balancing act: The couple have been documenting the 5-week journey on Kara’s VLOG – where Matt plays supporting roles of coach, judge and babysitter for their daughter Scotti while juggling work as a full-time firefighter. He’s no stranger to supporting Kara from the sidelines, both throughout the season and at the Games.

“Stress, that’s pretty much the main thing. Cause you have no control over how she does or what she’s doing and you really want her to do a good job, it’s just full-time stress pretty much,” he said.

Mat Fraser to Men’s Health: “It’s definitely disappointing not to see my name at the top.” — The four-time Fittest Man on Earth sat down with the magazine to discuss the 10th CrossFit Open, which is also the first time he hasn’t won the online competition since 2016:

— “I definitely pushed the off season a little bit longer than I usually do and it definitely showed.”

— On penalties: “There’s a lot of guys who are great during the Open, and then they go to the Games and they start getting hit with a bunch of no reps. Then, they get upset because, yeah, when they get tired, their form breaks down. That’s where they sacrifice their energy. I never have to worry about my form when I get tired because I intentionally practice good movements.”

“Down 100 Pounds and Diabetes Free, Now He Leans on CrossFit After a Crash,” by Jessica Danger, Morning Chalk Up

Tony Griffiths first walked through the doors of Ute CrossFit in Salt Lake City, UT on May 14, 2018. When he walked in for his “No Sweat Consult” he needed to take a seat and catch his breath before even starting. Griffiths confessed later that he had headed over to Ute CrossFit three previous times before finally getting the courage to come in.

Griffiths weighed almost 400 pounds, had only 32% of his oxygen available, had Type 2 diabetes that was being treated with both medication and an insulin shot, couldn’t walk more than 20 feet without getting winded, and was always depressed with low self-esteem.

“When I first saw him I knew group classes weren’t going to be an option for him. We went on to the office and began his consult. I always begin with ‘What brought you in today?’ After a long silence, he shared with me that he didn’t want to die. In that moment I decided I would personally train him,” said Brittany Perkins, who co-owns Ute CrossFit with her husband and Tommy Hackenbruck.

Perkins had Tony come in four days a week. For the first few weeks, she had him working in short bursts with lots of rest built in. After a few weeks of showing up for his sessions with Brittany, Tony was already experiencing milestones like finally being able to strap himself into the rower and grab the handle himself.

“…I just kept going.”

“It was all so hard at first, all of it. She was never embarrassed or anything she just had me do the best I could. I didn’t like any of it, none of it. There was nothing that I liked at all. I just kept going,” Griffiths told Morning Chalk Up.

His plan to just keep showing up was working. Brittany no longer had to help him get his shoes on and tied, or help him up when he bench pressed. Soon, he started sharing how much easier it was to get in and out of the Budweiser semi-truck he drives for work. He began to go grocery shopping and make his own meals, no more trips to drive-thru restaurants for six to seven cheeseburgers at a time.

“All these things were great, but what I remember most was how much he smiled and chatted in our sessions. He was so much more fun to be around and easier to talk with,” Perkins told the Morning Chalk Up.
