QUOTE OF THE DAY
|
“Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be your best. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgement, and shame. It’s a shield. It’s a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from flight.” — Brene Brown

How the Casey Classic Came to Be
|
Background.
In March of 2008, Kathleen “Casey” Santye was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. A neuromuscular disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, patients eventually lose their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe.
Devastating news.
Until her diagnosis, Casey lived a normal life with her husband and three kids. She ran four miles a day with her dog, Jake, and she regularly hiked the mountains around her home. But once her diagnosis came she had to start using a cane, and then a walker. By October, she was almost completely paralyzed from the waist down. She would never walk again.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2009, just before 9:00 AM, Casey lost her battle to ALS. From her diagnosis to her death, it was just under a year and a half.
Now what?
After her death, Casey’s children Erin and Tim were both introduced to CrossFit. The challenging atmosphere immediately drew them in, and they felt empowered and grateful for what their abled bodies could accomplish after watching their mother deteriorate before their eyes.
They were hooked and both have been involved in CrossFit ever since: Tim, as an athlete at Reebok CrossFit One in Canton, MA during his employment with Reebok and Erin earning her L-2 trainer certificate and coaching adults and kids at CrossFit Stealth in New Brunswick, NJ.
We love it.
One of the things that initially drew Erin to CrossFit was the commitment to community. So when she approached the team at CrossFit Stealth with a fundraising idea five years ago, she knew they would be more than willing to support her. CrossFit for Casey, now known as the Casey Classic, was born.
Established in 2011 by her husband, Anthony J. Santye, and their children, Erin, Tim and Lauren, the Kathleen “Casey” Santye Memorial Fund supports the patient service programs that were so helpful to Casey and her family.
Sounds like CrossFit.
Over the past five years, the CrossFit Stealth community, along with friends and family, have raised more than $30,000 for the fund through ticket sales, donations, and a raffle contest with prizes from companies like RP Strength, Chestee, 2P00D, Caffeine and Kilos, and Barbella Box.
This year, CrossFit Stealth is holding the Sixth Annual Casey Classic on Saturday, October 20, 2018 and are looking forward to another great day celebrating the strength of their community, the ones who CrossFit because they can.

Weight Watchers Sheds It’s Name
|
What happened?
Weight Watchers has officially changed their name to WW.
Come again?
Weight Watchers, the 50-year-old company that’s been peddling diet advice to women across America, has decided that it can’t survive with a diet only doctrine any longer.
Well what else would they do?
Instead, they’re trying something else. The new tagline is “Wellness that Works”.
“We believe that wellness is not just about one thing,” said WW President and CEO Mindy Grossman. “Ultimately we’re looking for sustainable options for people to live the healthiest lives they want to live.”
The bottom line.
WW is really only attempting to re-brand as a “health and wellness” company. Weight loss programs like these have not been proven to help people make long-term lifestyle changes.
Want to know what has already proven to help people live their healthiest lives?

“The Problem with Fitbit Based Life Insurance,” by Jessica Danger, Morning Chalk Up
The 156-year-old life insurance company, John Hancock announced last week that they will now require all policyholders to use wearable devices to record health and fitness data.
Since 2015, John Hancock has offered policy discounts for customers who use wearables but making it mandatory is a first for the industry. According to Brooks Tingle, head of John Hancock’s insurance unit, those “policyholders worldwide live 13 to 21 years longer than the rest of the insured population.”
That’s what they said, but recent studies aren’t sold on the correlation between wearbles and actually improving health or fitness, or even persuading them to be more active.
In a year-long study involving 800 randomly selected participants, which was published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology in 2016, found “no evidence of improvements in health outcomes” even for those wearing Fitbits. That same year, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a two-year long study analyzing 470 eighteen to 35-year-old to see if wearing a Fitbit correlated to greater weight loss.
Spoiler alert: it did not. They actually lost less weight than those who did not wear one.
“As wearable devices are becoming more popular and may facilitate an initial lifestyle change, their effects on improving long-term outcomes remains to be seen,” said Dani Urcuyo, a CrossFitter and lead physician of SteadyMD’s primary care practice for CrossFit athletes. “However, even if wearable devices do not change long-term outcomes their potential benefit may help healthcare practitioners provide better care. The information obtained from wearable technology generates a repository of data to build predictive models focusing on future health.”
Greg Glassman on the other hand, is not a big fan. He made headlines back in 2016 after saying in a CNBC interview that fitness trackers belonged in the “junk drawer.”
