WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE BOX

The International Weightlifting Committee announced they’re reducing the number of spots for weightlifters at the Olympics from 260 in 2016 to 196. They’re also limiting the number of divisions to seven for men and seven for women. Mike Kuschner of OPEX Fitness is now the official strength and conditioning coach of U.S.A. sailing and James Fitzgerald was named chairman of USA Functional Fitness Federation. Happy one year anniversary to Jenn Jones. Coming soon…whey protein from PuoriFrederik Aegidius does 32 185 pound hang squat cleans for time. Katrin Davidsdottir ran a 5K wearing a tutu and tights. Maddy Myers hits a 266 pound clean and jerk. It’s never too early to start training with the Worm. Carleen Mathews says goodbye to her dog Jasper. One of Val Voboril’s students came into class to show her teacher that she learned to do handstand push-ups. Ben Smith went golfing in his Reebok Nanos.

Tired of the same old squat? Grab a d ball or any other odd object and try some Bulgarian split squats like Stacie Tovar.

REFLECTIONS

Leslie McDonald on her stretch marks“Last week @thewellnecessities shared her tiger stripes and I responded that there are days I’m ashamed of mine…and by that I mean my stretch marks. They’re unavoidable; I see them every time I shower, moisturize, wear dresses, shorts and bathing suits. They can’t be covered up and the more I notice them, the more I feared other people did too. Why did I care? Because I thought stretch marks meant I didn’t workout hard enough, or I ate too much chocolate when I should’ve been eating kale. My marks are me. Why should I be ashamed of what I’ve been through and the symbols of the shifts in mindset that helped me transform myself into who I am today.”

“Doctor: Your Child Doesn’t Need Sugar” by Shakha Gillin, CrossFit Journal

Sugar: It’s everywhere, and it seems that we can’t just get enough.

Over the last 30 years, Americans have increased their sugar consumption by over 30 percent. It’s in ice cream, doughnuts, cake, frozen yogurt and all the other usual culprits, but it’s also hidden in most processed foods, such as cereals, breads and pastas. The biggest source of them all? Sweetened beverages such as sodas, juices, sports drinks and coffee/tea drinks—liquid diabetes.

What does this level of consumption mean for our kids? Do they need this sugar?
