This is Our Kind of Marathon
|
The story.
CrossFit Lincoln coach Mark Geist just ran the Nebraska half-marathon to raise funds for Royal Family Kids Camp, a nonprofit that provides weeklong summer camps across the country for foster kids between ages 6-12 who have often experienced trauma and abuse.
But he raised the money a bit differently than other runners.
Geist set a goal to run the Lincoln Half-Marathon but also aiming to pet 200 dogs along the way, gathering donations not per mile run but per dog pet.
But at the 12-mile mark, Geist realized he was only at 175 dogs. Geist started looking into cars along the course for dogs to pet, getting to 199 before he spotted Layla, a University of Nebraska Police Department service dog and her handler Russ Johnson. Although Layla was on duty, Johnson let Geist pet her to meet his goal.
That’s a 10/10 good girl.
Thanks in part to Geist, the camp is now fully funded. “Sometimes it’s easy to forget what these kids have experienced when they’re making jokes at camp or in the middle of a food fight. That’s a good thing. I want them to forget and be kids for a week,” Geist said.

Ben Smith’s Hunt for Eleven
|
The most highly anticipated sanctioned event of the year kicks off this weekend as the Rogue Invitational takes place in Columbus, Ohio. The two-day competition – which takes place in Rogue’s brand new event facility built for the event – features the second largest prize purses of any event this season: $400,000.
What’s at stake: The biggest prize for 2015 Games champion Ben Smith has nothing to do with money, but extending his streak of consecutive individual Games appearances to 11.
There are two all-time records at play: the record for consecutive individual CrossFit Games appearances, the record for most individual appearances all-time.
-
Starting in 2009, Smith has qualified for a record 10 consecutive individual appearances at the CrossFit Games, he has the chance to extend his record to 10 at Rogue.
-
If he fails to do so, the next athlete behind him on the consecutive streak list is Camille Leblanc-Bazinet with 9, and her streak will be ending this year due to her going team with ROMWOD/WIT.
-
After Leblanc-Bazinet, the next highest active streak would be Scott Panchik, who just qualified for his 8th consecutive appearance dating back to 2012
-
If Smith qualifies he’ll also set the record for the most appearances with 11, breaking a three-way tie with Becca Voigt, and Annie Thorisdottir. Thorisdottir recently qualified for her 10th Games this season.
-
Becca Voigt has the chance to earn a spot to her 11th Games as well later this season when she competes at the Granite Games, but Smith has the chance to be the first to eclipse the 10 year mark.

“Redemption and Recovery in Brazil,” by Tommy Marquez, Morning Chalk Up
The busiest sanctioned event weekend of the season is on the horizon, with three competitions on tap for athletes and teams trying and lock down an invite to the 2019 CrossFit Games. Time is starting to run out, and after this weekend only three more Sanctionals remain on the calendar.
For a handful of athletes and teams descending on the Brazil CrossFit Championships, the competition floor at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil presents an opportunity beyond the surface goal of earning a spot to Madison. It’s a chance to recoup past accomplishments, and rebuild careers that were derailed by injury, illness, and adversity.
Less than one month ago, things looked a lot different for the team from one of the most storied gyms in CrossFit Games history. Invictus X had just won the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge, beating out a talented MisFit team, and one of their team members, Chantelle Loehner, was in line to qualify through the Open for her first CrossFit Games as an individual.
Then it all came crashing down.
Loehner tested positive for PEDs, her spot to the Games gone pending a B sample test and, along with it, Invictus X’s invite from the MACC. Suddenly the team that finished second at the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games was left scrambling for a backup plan.
The team set their sights on Brazil and added Hayley Murillo to the roster to replace Loehner. Murillo will also be looking for some redemption of her own after she was penalized on 19.3 during the video review process, knocking her out of a top 20 worldwide qualifying position, and prompting an emotional withdrawal from the Open on social media.
A win in Brazil for Invictus X would help ease the sting of the last four weeks, and bring some redemption in the form of another invite to the CrossFit Games.
