QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things.” — Henry David Thoreau

Getting Adaptive Athletes to Use Their Fitness Outside

Some background.

Everyone should have the ability to enjoy fitness outside and try new sports. Which is why we think what Eagle Mount, a nonprofit based out of Bozeman, MT is doing is super cool.

What is it?

Eagle Mount was founded in 1982 by a retired Air Force General named Robert C. Mathis and his wife, Greta, who worked as a special-education teacher for years. Their mission is to provide outdoor experiences for “people with disabilities and young people with cancer, and to provide support for families of participants so that they shall mount up with wings as eagles.”

Originally, the program was only downhill skiing. They’ve since expanded to 19 acres that they use for everything from horseback-riding, swimming, and rock climbing.

They even have a fully outfitted, specialized gym for people with spinal cord injuries and also an adaptive playground.

Fitness for all.

Jen Hedrick, executive director of Eagle Mount, says the idea is to make the grounds a place that everybody can enjoy. “When you see kids playing on the adaptive playground, they’re having a blast and they don’t even see their differences.”

OPEN BRIEF.

“Exactly what I needed to do:” Noah Ohlsen finishes top 10 in 19.3, inches closer to qualifying

Week 3 of the 2019 CrossFit Games Open gave Noah Ohlsen an invaluable opportunity: to finish high up on the leaderboard and make up some ground.

“I went to bed before it was announced Thursday so I didn’t see it [until] Friday morning! [I] liked it when I saw it.”

Ohlsen, a five-time CrossFit Games athlete, wants to qualify for the CrossFit Games through the Open this year, but had a rough start with a 796th place finish on 19.1.

Where his start was uncharacteristically low on the leaderboard, both 19.2 and 19.3 show off what Ohlsen is capable of.

Coming off a stellar 32nd place finish worldwide on 19.2, Ohlsen “knew [19.3 would] be good but didn’t know how good” until it was all over. His first attempt was a lightning fast 8:11, but lightning fast isn’t good enough when every rep counts.

United “deeply disappointed” in live broadcast — Via The Washington Post, Washington D.C.’s MLS team signed a four-year deal last year with FloSports to provide the live stream for a majority of their regular season games. During their season opener, the first several minutes were unavailable for some, while others experienced poor quality. The issues were reportedly improved in the second half.

— Why we’re telling you this: Because FloSports owns FloElite, the streaming partner for 2019 Wodapalooza CrossFit Festival and Granite Games.

“Does Eating Fat Make You Fat?” by Alex Leaf, Examine

Whether you gain or lose weight depends on your total caloric intake, rather than on your macronutrient ratios. That said, there are reasons why, in theory, eating fat is more likely to make you fat.

Dietary fat is the macronutrient that can most easily increase your body fat: the two types of fat are essentially the same, so making the former into the latter is easy for your body. Dietary fat has a TEF of just 0 — 3% (of the three macronutrients, it requires the least energy to digest, relative to the energy it provides), and it gets stored with 90 — 95% efficiency (compared to 75 — 85% efficiency for carbs).

When you eat carbs, your body can, in order of priority, burn them for energy, store them as glycogen, burn them off as heat, or, as its very last choice, turn them into fat. So if you overeat with carbs as your main source of calories, the excess might not translate as fat gain.

When you eat protein, your body can, in order of priority, use it for protein synthesis and many other metabolic purposes, burn it for energy, or, rarely, turn it into glucose or fat. So, again, if you overeat with protein as your main source of calories, the excess might not translate as fat gain.

When you eat fat, however, your body has only two options: burn it for energy, if neither carbohydrate nor excess protein is available, or store it as body fat. If you overeat with fat as your main source of calories, even for just one day, the excess translates as fat gain.
