CROSSFIT FOR ORPHANS
|
The story.
Thousands of miles away, hundreds of orphans at Happy Times Orphanage in Uganada struggle with basic necessities like food and clean water. According to UNICEF, Uganda has 2.5 million orphans, one of the largest orphan populations in Africa.
Why’s this coming up?
Meet Laurie and Travis Coombs, who adopted one of these orphans last year and are working to adopt another one. The couple also runs the Reno-based A New Song International, a non-profit which exists to support orphanages like Happy Times Orphanage.
What else?
On November 18th, Double Edge Fitness in Reno, NV is kicking off their annual fundraiser WOD — MetCon 4 Hope — which was started a few years back to help support local and national charities like A New Song get up off the ground. Teams at the gym are competing to see who can raise the most amount of money, then they’re throwing down a few WODs.

What to tell your friend who’s doing Movember…
We mustache you a question. A few years ago, two box buddies wanted to start making a difference in their community by donating to charities and others in need of a hand up, but without a sense of direction or focus. That sense of giving transformed into Moustablish, an organization that seeks out less visible or obvious charities to support financially. For the past two years, they’ve been working with Folds of Honor’s Kansas City chapter, which provides scholarships to the children and spouses of fallen or disabled service members. It might sound a little harsh, but their slogan is “you either
donate or you do not” — so, we mustache you a question, which one are you?
P.S. Off topic, but have you seen Lucas Parker’s mustache?
What to tell your friend who wishes their Alexa had more skills…
Hey Alexa, can you do a backflip? Meet Atlas, Boston Dynamics’ — AKA Google’s former research team’s — new humanoid robot. And yes, it can do a backflip, and box jumps. Boston Dynamics posted this video yesterday of Atlas showing off. They should introduce Atlas to Fight Gone Bad and see how that goes.
What to tell your friend who really needs to #LOL…
No one uses that hashtag anymore. But this still had us ROFL. Whopps, we did it again. #Britney

STORY SERIES: How has CrossFit helped you achieve a goal?
“I have been battling weight and self esteem since I was a kid. Before I started CrossFit, I had a major eating disorder. The first day I started, the coaches told me to throw out my scale and eat, a lot! That’s exactly what I did. I threw out the scale and started noticing the foods that fueled my body for the day and the WODs. I truly believe CrossFit saved my life! I have no idea what I weigh now because I stopped tracking the number on the scale and started tracking the number on the bar!” — Cammaron Butcher, CrossFit Battle Ready in Greeley, CO

“Greg Fox Fights off Chronic Disease With Fitness” by Emily Beers, CrossFIt Journal
“We have your blood work back, and the results were, um, alarming.” Those were the words a nurse delivered to Greg Fox over the phone two years ago.
“Usually they just call you back and wait to give you the bad news in person, but she told me right over the phone,” Fox said. “I knew it was bad.” The results showed his blood pressure was dangerously high, as was his cholesterol.
“I was also borderline diabetic. My doctor told me, ‘You’re probably a year away from becoming a diabetic.’ I didn’t think about treating it with diet, though, because I thought, ‘Oh, I’m on medication, so I don’t have to watch what I eat anymore,’” he said.
Taking medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and inflammation was something Fox said he had accepted as part of life. In fact, at the time he even assumed he’d die at a young age. “I don’t think any guy in my family has lived past the age of 60, and I assumed I would be the same,” said Fox, now 36.
