Welcome to Day One of the CrossFit Games

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. It’s Day One of the 2018 CrossFit Games. Today’s edition is fueled by FlapJacked, the Official Breakfast Sponsor of the Morning Chalk Up.

Happy first day of the CrossFit Games. If you’re in Madison this week, don’t miss us in the Vendor Village. We just launched three new Mighty Muffins and we want to hear what you think! Test out Peanut Butter & Jelly, Banana Caramel or Triple Berry and then take a muffin for the road. We’ll be hanging out all week, so make sure to come say hi!

QUICK BRIEF

What You Need to Know Going Into Day 1.

The 2018 CrossFit Games kicks off in six hours with the first Individual Event, the Criterium. There’s a 40% chance of rain today, but virtually no humidity, and a high of 82.

We don’t skip meals, so we’re starting with a pancake breakfast at the RXBAR RV in the campgrounds from 7-10AM.

As athletes are preparing to kick off the hardest and longest day one of competition in CrossFit Games history, here are a few things we noticed

  1. By the end of the day, when you tally up the total competition time, individual athletes will have spent nearly five hours (4:47) competing, completed 2,370 muscle-ups, biked 960,000 meters, and then made max lift attempts in the deadlift, the back squat, and the strict press.
  2. Athletes have just 35 minutes rest between completing 30 muscle-ups for time and starting the CrossFit Total. Both events are completed outside.
  3. With a four-hour time cap on the row marathon, we’re looking at hours and hours of rowing, literally. Fourteen male and female athletes who finished top 10 in the 2013 half marathon row are returning this year, including fifth place finisher Roy Gamboa with a time of 1:20:09 and second place finisher Margaux Alvarez with a time of 1:29:02.
  4. Yesterday, all athletes completed a time trial to determine start positions. The men averaged 1:48:90  for one 1200 meter lap, while the women averaged 1:57:85. The first five men to ride out will be Adrian Mundwiler, Rasmus Andersen, Mat Fraser, Cole Sager, and Lukas Hogberg. The first five women to ride out will be Laura Horvath, Katrin Davidsdottir, Tennil Beuerlein, Michele Fumagalli, and Cassidy Lance-McWherter.

  1. Sara sigmundsdottir documentary bonus episode.
  2. The CrossFit Total Returns to the Games: It was July 2007 in Aromas, CA. The first CrossFit Games kicked off with three events across two days: a classic CrossFit style WOD, a trail run, and the CrossFit Total. “The CrossFit Total reflects an athlete’s functional strength capacity more accurately than any other test,” wrote Mark Rippetoe back in 2006 when the workout was designed. “The CrossFit Total is the sum of the best of three attempts at the squat, the press, and the deadlift.”
  3. A Brief History of CrossFit Games Repeat Workouts: At the very heart of Greg Glassman’s CrossFit methodology is the concept of trackable, repeatable, and measurable tests of fitness. Over the past eleven CrossFit Games there have been 10 repeat workouts Dave Castro has programmed; two of those workouts show up tomorrow.
