How are 2018 Games Athletes Performing in the 2019 Open?
|
After two scored events — out of five (or six) total — here’s a quick snapshot of how 2018 CrossFit Games athletes are performing in the 2019 CrossFit Open.
To help you digest this data, we’ve pulled out a few key findings:
-
20 athletes are currently in a qualifying position via top 25. We say top 25 because of the backfilling after national champions. However, more than half are sitting in very strong qualifying positions (50th or better, or top 3 in their country).
-
Six of the top 10 female athletes competed at the 2018 CrossFit Games.
-
12 athletes are currently first in their country.
-
10 athletes are not doing the Open this year.

OFFICIAL 19.1 Results — After review, CrossFit HQ assessed a major penalty on Lazar Dukic’s score, which was tied for first. The penalty was for lack of depth in his squats. He ended with a score of 350 reps. Olivia Leeper, who was initially first, recorded a score that did not match the video she submitted so her score was adjusted to match the video.
— OFFICIAL Winners: Snorre Fjågesund (411 reps) and Mikaela Norman (366 reps). However, Fjågesund didn’t collect the $2,019 in prize money because he didn’t record a video.
— KEY TAKEAWAY: If you’re that fit you should record every workout. Period.
19.3 Live Announcement from Iceland — Yesterday, Reykjavik CrossFit Championship announced that they will host a live 19.3 announcement. BK Gudmundsson will go head-to-head with Frederik Aegidius from the top floor of Perlan, a museum and restaurant that offers incredible

Armen Hammer’s take on Dave Castro Not Returning — Armen Hammer yesterday released a new video debating whether the CrossFIt Games is better off with or without Dave Castro. “The question we should all be asking ourselves is this: Are the CrossFit Games a sporting event, representative of an actual organized sport or are they a game show?”
— “Dave Castro essentially built a role for himself that created “Deal or No Deal,” the CrossFit Games version except Castro was the showrunner, the director, the Banker, and Howie Mandel.”
Android Issue Soon Fixed for CrossFit Games App — Yesterday, CrossFit announced that the Android CrossFit Games App could potentially be fixed this week.
A Love Poem by Lukas Esslinger — Lukas Esslinger was the least fittest of the #TrashTalkThursday group for 19.2. As promised, Esslinger recited a love poem as penance.
Austin Malleolo on Being a Father and Training — Six-time Games athlete, affiliate owner, and Head Trainer at Reebok One Austin Malleolo lists five tips to balance career and fitness with a family.
— “Fitness is a top priority for me; it’s my career, and, more importantly, it’s my passion. As a father, a business owner and a coach, I don’t have a lot of free time, and when I do, I prioritize fitness. It may mean working out at 5:00 AM or 11:00 PM, or in a hotel room instead of your preferred gym. Bottom line: If it’s important enough to you, prioritize it, be flexible and get it done.”
— “My wife is my number one fan. She knows how passionate I am about fitness, supports me making time during the day to work out and is always asking about my training. Having someone who is supportive of your passions makes all the difference.”
