QUOTE OF THE DAY

“When we fail, there’s nothing wrong with it. You just failed at that particular event; you’re not a failure.” — Katrin Davidsdottir

Virtue Athletic – New Shoes, Who Dis?

It’s Monday, and Jeff Engelhardt walks into the very first CrossFit affiliate – CrossFit Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, California – for his daily 6pm evening class. He laces up his training shoes, except what he’s wearing on his feet for the workout isn’t your typical nano, metcon, or any other functional shoe you’ve seen. It’s a new piece of footwear of his own design, just launched on Kickstarter, called THE 01 by his new company Virtue Athletic.

New shoes? I’m listening: A veteran of the product design industry, Engelhardt has spent the last three years designing and creating footwear for cyclists and mountain bikers for the popular brand Giro, whose office is located just over a mile down the road from CrossFit Inc. headquarters. A longtime CrossFitter, Engelhardt regularly found himself dissatisfied with the training shoe options available to him despite the growing involvement of popular footwear brands.

“I’m endlessly critical and curious about objects, it’s what drove me to a career as a product designer,” reflects Engelhardt, “I kept having a nagging thought in the gym that my shoes, which are really the only piece of equipment you’re using every single day, worked well enough but didn’t really speak to what functional fitness and training were all about.”

Engelhardt set out to create a functional training shoe that could support the demands of a training program like CrossFit – where athletes might need to run, jump, lift, and climb in the same workout – without sacrificing performance in any particular area or adding unnecessary design elements to the shoe. “For as pared down and simple as our style of training is I felt more and more that the shoes being designed for it were over-complicated, over-built, and over-priced.”

The result: The 01, a no frills training shoe designed with the minimum effective dose mentality built around Engelhardt’s knowledge of function and design within the footwear industry. Simple, straightforward, and without the added gimmicks used by brands to up the price point.

The Open Be Damned. We’re Eating These 13 Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Snacks Now

We just finished up week 2 of the Open and have a healthy competition (minus Justin and Tommy’s shit-talking) going on between all of the Morning Chalk Up staff. While all in good fun, it didn’t take long for us to realize that we won’t be getting to the games with our athletic abilities. That being said, we decided to stay in our lane of reporting the latest CrossFit news, step into living our best basic lives and bring you this important piece of hard-hitting journalism.

That’s right, fall is here and while we should be working on our weaknesses (ahem, double-unders for me, thanks 20.2 for crushing my dreams), we’re focused on an even bigger issue: the best pumpkin snacks from good ol’ Trader Joe’s.

If you’re hungry, you may want to revisit this after you’ve eaten, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Pumpkin Spice Pumpkin Seeds – This might seem redundant, but hey, it’s fall and we wanted to get as much pumpkin spice as we can.

Pumpkin Spice Granola Bark – It’s organic. It’s pumpkin. It’s got dark chocolate. What more could you want?

Pumpkin Spice Almond Beverage – Put this in your Cheerios and your life will never be the same again.

  • GOING FULL SEND WITH BURPEES — Last Thursday, the owners of CrossFit Full Send in London, Ontario completed 1000 burpees a piece to raise $1000 for Bethanys Hope, a local charity that works to find a cure and raise  awareness for Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.
  • KETTLEBELLS FOR BALLS — On Saturday, November 23, CrossFit Full Potential in Newburyport, MA is hosting the 3rd Annual Kettlebells for Balls. All proceeds from this event will benefit the League of Extraordinary MoBro’s and the Movember Foundation, a foundation dedicated to men’s health.

CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES (a highlight reel around social media of CrossFit pros and average joes)

Seventeen-year-old Nina Ladvenicova does touch and go snatches at 139 pounds • Alex LaChance back squats 321 pounds for a PR • Sean Hutchinson snatches 205 pounds for three • Kate Nye back squats 319 pounds for ten reps • Matilda Garnes cleans 220 pounds.

…and if this is 20.3 then we’re all in a heap of trouble.

Open 20.2 Scoring Validation — Affiliate validation for CrossFit Open 20.2 scores are due today by 5:00 PM PT.

Another Rogue Legend Invitation — Mikko Salo is confirmed for the Rogue Invitational as a Legend.

If you only read one thing today — The Boston Globe profiled CrossFit affiliate owner Dale King who is using CrossFit to fight on the front lines of the opiod epidemic in Portsmouth, OH.

— “But as King prepared to open the new gym, there were few signs that all the government money and political rhetoric had made much of a difference in this rural Appalachian region that many saw as the epicenter of the national opioid crisis.”

— “Help wasn’t coming,” he said. “We were on our own.”

— And so, he and a group of fitness instructors, rehab counselors, and businesspeople decided to try a new strategy: addiction recovery meets CrossFit, the hard-core exercise regimen that has a cult-like status around the country. The self-funded venture would become part of a larger effort to turn the city around.

OUTAthlete Program Accepting Applications — Enrollment is now open for the OUTAthlete Program, a sponsorship from the OUT Foundation that awards a year-long membership to a local LGBTQ+ friendly CrossFit gym, nutrition coaching, 30% off all OUTWOD apparel, and sponsored gifts. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply by November 22.

John Coltey Has Been Training With Michele Letendre — John Coltey thanked Michele Letendre on Instagram for coaching him over the last few weeks.

— “Got to spend the last few weeks getting coached in person by the best in the biz. Thank you Mich Letendre and DekaComp for allowing me to come up and train and for all of the help.

— “Also, thank you to Ledan Cose and Michele Letendre for welcoming me and all of my computer monitors into your home and showing me all of the cool places around Montreal. And thank you to Deka CrossFit and all of the members for treating me like family during my extended drop in.”

“Battle Cancer London Aims To Kick Cancer to the Dust,” by Jessica Danger, Morning Chalk Up

Since its inception in 2017, Battle Cancer has raised more than $500,000 for cancer charities worldwide, with six events across the US, Ireland, UK, Germany and Spain in 2019 alone.

They just closed out a Los Angeles box tour earlier this year that raised an estimated $20,000 through takeovers all over the city. But last weekend, Battle Cancer brought the competition back to London and they made it an event to remember.

Almost 1400 athletes and 2,500 spectators converged upon the Olympia London for Battle Cancer London.

The event itself is participatory, kicking off with a speech from founder Scott Britton and a thank you video featuring Pete Williams parents, who were part of the reason Battle Cancer came about.

Each competitor is also a fundraiser, as each team is asked to raise at least $200 before the competition. The day off, each team battled to the top of the leaderboard through five workouts of the day, with their eye on that cash prize for the top three teams.

It got equally competitive for spectators, as Battle Cancer set aside a special area for anyone wanting to complete 20.2 that day, thanks to partner Wolverson Fitness who built and ran the area.
