QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You have to be odd to be number one.” — Dr. Seuss

BRING YOUR BEER, AND YOUR YOGA.

THE STORY.

Yoga fads are back, and this time it appears they’ve traded their goats for beer bottles. CrossFit Icehouse in Fargo, North Dakota and the Drekker Brewing Company have partnered together to bring you Viking Yoga.

WHAT’S VIKING YOGA?

In a sense, it’s beer and yoga. Hosted at the Drekker Brewing Company, participants can have a pint of beer before, during or after class. They put together the concept to entice first timers to come out and try yoga. After all, it’s a lot easier to relax when you have a cold one in your hands.

HOW’D THIS ALL COME ABOUT?

We’re not 100% on how CrossFit Icehouse got started, but the concept of drinking and stretching is quite popular in London, where drinking beer and holding poses — think beer bottle on your head — is actually incorporated into Vinyasa yoga routines.

You’ll enjoy few things more than watching a bunch of brits wearing Lulu drinking beer in a London studio basement while in Warrior II.

STORY SERIES: How has CrossFit helped you achieve a goal?
“My first goal when I started CrossFit was to be able to make it up three flights of stairs without needing to rest. At 5’10”, 283 pounds, and + 44% body fat, I was like a fish out of water doing routine tasks. Something had to change. After a year, I am down to 220 pounds and 30% body fat. Feel Great. Love the sport. Even competed at a local event!” — Phillip Smith, CrossFit Urban Jungle in Plano, TX. CrossFitting for one year.

“I liked the strength part of it and growing up this was a man’s world…”
Like many other women, Jessica Jones discovered CrossFit while watching the CrossFit Games on ESPN, seeing athletes like Annie Thorisdottir and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet lifting weights normally reserved for the big boys.
From ESPN, Jones went down the YouTube rabbit hole and discovered this entire world of fit females who weren’t afraid of lifting. “I liked the strength part of it and growing up this was a man’s world. Women didn’t come in and back squat 200 pounds,” Jones told the Troy Messenger.
Jones is a member of CrossFit 1776 and a growing international community of women redefining what it means to be fit.
