Another Noise Complaint From Neighbors
|
The story.
Functional Fitness Te Awamutu in New Zealand had a drop-in recently, neighbor Kerry Bowler. Except she didn’t want to get a WOD in, she wanted to file a complaint about the noise.
Bowler, who lives down the road from Functional Fitness, has formally complained about the noise to Waipa District Council five times since March. “The bass goes through the walls and inside the house, even to my bedroom,” she said in a news interview.
Seriously?
She claims she’s gone down to the gym several times, requesting that the volume be lowered. Still, she feels no effort has been made on their part to help ease the noise.
But, it seems the gym has done no wrong. An environmental services team visited the gym and said that they are within the 55 decibel limit.
Owner Wayne Bryant, who just took ownership of the gym in July of 2017, said he’s “gone out of our way to turn everything down for her and she’s still complaining.”
His solution?
“I’ve told the council Kerry can have a free membership. We’ve done everything to make her happy.”
We don’t think she’s interested.
Why it matters.
In August, CrossFit Horsepower in Hermosa Beach was dealt a death blow with door closing regulations when the city council voted 3-0 to deem Horsepower a public nuisance, saying that neighbors and residents had been “greatly and adversely affected” by music and by the vibrations of the weights being dropped in workouts.
As more stories like this emerge, affiliate owners should take note. The next time a neighbor comes by with a concern, hear them out and keep your doors open.

6 Places to Visit on National Coffee Day
|
Did someone say coffee?
People. Hold everything.
Tomorrow is National Coffee Day.
Say what?
Coffee shops and restaurants around the country want to serve you steamy, delicious cups of Joe to celebrate. Here are six places to drop-in on Saturday.
-
Dunkin’ Donuts — Pretty much buy one, get one. They must have been too busy worrying about changing their name to just Dunkin’ to think of anything more creative. Next year?
-
Krispy Kreme — This week Krispy Kreme has replaced their regular glaze with a coffee flavored glaze. (Um, yes.) And they’ve paired it with a new glazed doughnut-flavored coffee, which you can get for free at participating locations on Saturday.
-
Caribou Coffee — as well as Einstein Bros. Bagels that carry Caribou, are giving customers a free coffee of any size when you buy some grub too.
-
Peet’s — 25% off any one pound of beans that you can make yourself at home. (We approve.) Don’t have a Peet’s near you? You can use the promo code “COFFEEDAY18” online.
-
Chameleon Cold Brew — One of our personal favorites, they’re going to offer up the chance to snag a month’s supply of coffee on their Instagram page.
-
Whole Foods — Whole Foods is going full send, with a three day buy one, get one sale on all Allegro 12-ounce packaged coffee.
Know who’s not participating this year? Starbucks. Instead, they’re donating two million coffee seeds to help rebuild Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria one year ago, where the coffee industry was devastated.

What to tell your friend who wants to try intermittent fasting…
Pay attention to your body. For some of us, intermittent fasting is a terrible idea. (Us. We are the us. We don’t skip meals here.) But at the end of the day, it’s important to remember that what works for someone else may or may not work for you. So give it a go and take detailed notes on performance and how you feel, and see what happens. At the end of the day, even if it doesn’t work, you’ll have learned something about your body.
What to tell your friend who just heard that deadlfts, squats and burpees are dangerous…
You mean functional movements like picking something up off the ground and putting it back down, getting up off the ground or lowering yourself into a chair and standing back up again are considered dangerous for people over 50? Dang. Never. Knew. That. Well here are 17 badass athletes over 50 who apparently didn’t know that either which is why they’re doing those things…and badass.

“How CrossFit Turned An Overweight College Grad Into a Very Fit Marine,” by Ericka Andersen, Morning Chalk Up
When you know, you know. At least that’s how freshly minted Marine Officer Zach Bowman felt nearly two years ago when he decided he wanted to serve his country at the age of 23.
He could have been swayed from his goal of joining “the few and the proud” because of a major strength deficit and weight surplus (he weighed 260 pounds) when that dream began. Instead, he used his weakness as fuel to reach the lofty goal of joining the Marines as an officer — not something just anyone can attain.
According to Major Trey Kennedy, who would become Bowman’s Officer Selection Officer (OSO), less than 50% of those who apply to become Marine Corps officers even make it past the interview process to get into Officer Candidate School (OCS). After that, only two-thirds of those who start end up graduating — but he knew from the “get-go” that Bowman would be one of them, due to his very evident determination.
Bowman’s success wasn’t a surprise to friends either, those who call him very “driven and self-disciplined,” someone who has an “unbelievable work ethic.” The road to the Marines was paved with hard physical work and determination that would be an inspiration to anyone — and CrossFit is what started it all.
