Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Today’s edition is powered by O2 Natural Recovery. Previously known as formula O2, they’ve dropped the word “formula” and are sporting new branding, but that liquid gold in the can is exactly the same. High in caffeine/electrolytes, low in sugar/calories, formula O2 is highly oxygenated to help your body process post-workout toxins faster. Recovery is Reincarnation. Affiliate owners interested in selling O2 at their box can get FREE samples of O2 here.

Chandler Smith reflects on partially losing his finger and his competitive future…“Losing the part of my finger messed with my head for a number of reasons, but none was more devastating than the fact that it took away my chances at competing in the CrossFit Games season this year and potentially in future years as well. Specifically, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to grip heavy weights or hold on in grip intensive WODs, and that the pain from breaking the finger would continue to affect my ability to catch heavy cleans without a ton of pain. Today was a big step forward for my confidence in my prospects of making Games 2022 a reality as I hit a 345# PR C+J and a legitimate no-hitch 590# deadlift. I’m nowhere near as good as I was or close to where I need to be, but I’m always up for some quantifiable proof that I’m moving in the right direction while training takes a back seat to deployment preparation. Onwards and upwards.”

Dr. Kevin R. Stone, an orthopedic surgeon at The Stone Clinic in San Francisco, makes the case for more CrossFit in high school…”CrossFit’s virtue is a strength and conditioning program with constantly varied functional movements…The fitness variation partly substitutes for the cross training and skill development available to three-sport athletes. Metrics posted on the white board at the CrossFit gym quantify the athlete’s progress, and compares his or her achievements across the entire CrossFit world. And the daily work-outs, posted online, make the fitness program so ubiquitous that the barriers of cost, travel and organizational support have completely disappeared. Best of all, it works. High school athletes are bringing a soaring level of fitness to the practice field.”
BEN BERGERON’S TOP 10 MOMENTS FROM THE CROSSFIT GAMES
#4…The Dottir Showdown…The women’s final was probably the single most epic moment of the 2017 Games…Annie Thorisdottir got to the lunges first, and had a big 20-foot head start over Katrin and Sara. By the time the three Dottirs emerged as the leaders, every single person in the stadium was on their feet. Then, about three-quarters of the way down the floor, something happened. Annie put her kettbells down. Within seconds, Katrin and Sara had closed the gap, and it was suddenly a three-way Icelandic battle for the lead. If the Alliant Energy Center had been a spaceship, it would have taken off—the crowd was absolutely beside itself.
…The three Dottirs finished 1-2-3, but the drama wasn’t over— Kara Webb and Tia-Clair Toomey, who were battling for the top of the podium, finished in a dead heat. Kara slid onto the finish mat nineteen hundreds of a second before Tia, and it was 2016 all over again—the points race was so close that no one knew for sure who had won the Games. Super exciting way to close out the 2017 season—loved it.”

WHAT TO TELL YOUR COACH WHO DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THAT EXTRA SPACE…
There’s more to CrossFit boxes than adult classes. CrossFit NWAin Bentonville, AR, is teaming up with Benton County sheriff’s deputies and juvenile justice officials to train teens currently on probation. For teens who successfully complete the program, the judge will grant them a clean slate. “I think that we can give a skill set that these young men can carry throughout their lives. Hopefully, we make a difference in their lives,” Sheriff Shawn Holloway told this Arkansas newspaper.
