QUOTE OF THE DAY
|
“There is no one giant step that does it. It’s a lot of little steps.” — Unknown
|
When your community hates CrossFit.
|
Background.
CrossFit Horsepower prides themselves on serving the community. Their website reads, “Each day at CrossFit Horsepower is a new adventure. A new challenge. A new chance to get to know your community, and to get to know yourself.”
But not everyone in Hermosa Beach, CA agrees. The city has received “numerous and continuous” complaints from neighbors since 2014. The charges range from noise, to vibrations, to shocks that some have even mistaken for earthquakes. They’ve even complained about atheltes running in surrounding streets.
For reals?
CrossFit Horsepower has tried to combat these complaints by adding more mats, signs forbidding athletes from dropping their weights, and even removing the bass from the audio systems.
“Our facility is stocked with the finest equipment available, and every square inch of the premises exudes the level of luxury that the members of our community deserve.”
Enough is enough.
But the neighbors and the city have had it. The city will hold a public hearing to decide whether the complaints constitute a public nuisance and to discuss possible solutions, listing shutting down the business as a last resort.

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL.
Regionals Reflections.
|
Tia Wright — “This year was different. And I’m ok with it. It’s simply a sport and only a portion of the picture. I’m here to learn, I’m here to improve. This weekend was tons of that. I called my coach right after the events concluded and said, “so what do I do for my training tomorrow?” Just like any lifestyle, there are no phases, no ins and outs, just a consistently healthy life. Thus, I shall train my butt off better than ever for another 365 days and work toward another opportunity. I’m already excited. Get back to work. 2019.”
Carleen Mathews — “I’m OK. Yes there is disappointment in not making it back to the games, but there is so much more to be proud of. I am not defined by the Games, it’s been a part of my journey, but the journey continues. I am proud of my performance this weekend, I attacked every workout, I gave my all and I took some risks, I did not put pressure on myself, I took it all in, and I fought every rep. I know some people don’t know what to say, but know that while I can be disappointed I’m also very proud, and beyond grateful for the people who love me for me.”

TIP: KEEPING NUTRITION ON TOP — How do you keep nutrition on the top of your mind 12 months out of the year and not just the 12 weeks of your nutrition challenge. After all, you can’t get fit by only working out for the first three month then taking the rest of the year off.
CHALK UP IN 2 MINUTES (a highlight reel around social media of CrossFit pros and average joes)
More stories coming out of Regionals:
-
Invictus cleans up yet again — Not only are they sending their third affilaite team to the Games, but after two weekends they’ve qualified seven individual athletes: adding Emily Abbott, Kristi Eramo and Alex Anderson to the list. This is also the 10th consecutive year Invictus has qualified a team for the CrossFit Games.
P.S. Listening to Morgan Freeman recite “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley will give you the chills.
-
Adam Neiffer, owner of CrossFit Fort Vancouver is making his 10th consecutive trip to the Games, after they took third at the West Regional last weekend.
-
Hayley Murillo’s mom used to show horses at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. But she died of heart failure before she could ever see her daughter compete. So Hayley dedicated day three to her late mother.

“Training Starts Today” by Alexis Johnson
It’s midnight.
My body’s sore. I’m exhausted.
But I can’t sleep.
It’d be easy to start playing the blame game. I should’ve ran more. The elevation killed me. These girls were bigger and could move the weight better.
But I’m the one to blame. Going into day 3, I had one shot to get back into a qualifying spot. I fought like hell, left it all out on the floor, but it wasn’t enough.
Right now all I want to do is roll out of bed, suit up and hit the hotel gym, sweating through all the events, sweat through them all until I’m too tired to think any longer.
