Quick Details:

  • The first stage will feature 30 male and 30 female athletes.
  • The top five athletes from each division will advance to an in-person competition in Aromas, CA, from October 19-25.
  • Here’s the complete roster of who is competing.
  • Here’s the equipment list that was shared with athletes. In addition, athletes have been advised they need to have access to a 300m track for possible running events.
  • The first stage competition will be two days long, starting on Friday, September 18, according to athletes briefed on details of the event.
  • Athletes will be notified of events only 48-hours in advance.
  • Workout scores won’t be immediately reported, according to athletes. Nothing stops them from sharing among one another but the idea is to safeguard against any unfair advantage.

Quick Round-Up:

Athlete News and Notes:

  • Annie Thorisdottir confirmed that she would end her term on the Athlete Advisory Council after four months and return to competition in 2021.
  • Sara Sigmundsdottir and Björgvin K. Guðmundsson are completing their final Games training prep together, just as they did in 2015. For what it’s worth, Sigmundsdottir placed third at the Games that year.

CrossFit 171 Devastated by Hurricane Laura, Fellow Affiliate Owners Offer Help

CrossFit 171 Devastated by Hurricane Laura, Fellow Affiliate Owners Offer Help

On August 27, Hurricane Laura punished the Louisiana coastline, devastating homes and businesses along the way, including CrossFit 171 in Lake Charles.

  • “I have three bay doors and it blew them all in. The insulation from the roof fell down, the brick fell off the front (of the building), and the ceiling is falling down. A lot of water got in, too,” said CrossFit 171 owner Angela Morris, adding that various equipment was also damaged.

Needless to say, her gym is currently closed.

One big thing: Morris is focusing on the community and how to help her members before worrying about the gym.

  • “I’m not working on fixing the gym yet. I need to take care of my members first,” said Morris when we asked her about her plan to get her business up and running again.
  • “There are so many people around us — some of my members and their family members — who lost their homes. There are trees laying all over the place. Like massive trees. Trees where it takes three people holding hands to get their arms around them,” she said.
  • “And nobody has any power right now. They say it could be another four weeks without power. All you hear around here are the sounds of chainsaws and generators,” she continued. “And unless you’re an AT&T customer, your phone isn’t working. There’s no service. I have been lending out my phone to everyone.

As a result of losing their homes or businesses, many of her members are already canceling their memberships.

Equipment List Follow-Up: Addition By Subtraction

Equipment List Follow-Up: Addition By Subtraction

Yesterday we analyzed some interesting inclusions on the official equipment list for the online portion of the CrossFit Games coming up in just under two weeks, however the list itself only tells part of the story.

More than meets the eye: There’s always information to be gleaned from the cutting room floor, and programming for the CrossFit Games is no different. We’ve seen things that don’t make the cut for a given stage, or year, show up much later down the road, but they also give insight into Dave Castro’s creative process.

Spicy Pickled Summer Beans

Pickling is an ideal way to reap the benefits of summer vegetables long after the season is gone. This punchy brine works with any crunchy veg, but sturdy summer beans (like yellow wax or green beans) will stay snappy and bright for weeks. Eat them on their own or slice them up to add a smack od acidity to salads, sandwiches and grain bowls.
