CrossFit Horsepower Decides to Shut Their Doors
|
Some backstory.
In May of 2018, CrossFit Horsepower was deemed a public nuisance by the Hermosa Beach, CA City Council who claimed that neighbors and residents had been “greatly and adversely affected” by music, use of sidewalks for exercise and dropping of weights.
CrossFit Horsepower had 90 days to meet nearly impossible terms such as not being able to hear the music outside, no running outside and soundproofing the entire building.
Pretty much a deathblow.
Horsepower sued the city in November, asking a judge to set aside the city’s earlier decision that Horsepower is a public nuisance, and to compensate the gym’s owners for the lost value of the business, as well as attorney’s fees and litigation costs.
But it’s all proven to be too much, as Horsepower announced yesterday that they are closing their doors.
“We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and work with so many of our Hermosa Beach neighbors in their journey to improve their lives. We thank all of them for their years of dedication and support and are sorry we were forced to close our doors,” their Facebook page reads.
Not just about the noise.
CrossFit Horsepower addressed what all affiliate owners should be aware of.
“Regardless of what you think about our gym, it should be troubling to everyone that one or two of the City’s elected officials could use the City’s might and resources to extinguish a lawful, existing business just because they didn’t like it, or decided that particular business didn’t fit their vision for the community, or appease their constituency.”

Why Lindy Barber Will Never Compete Again — Yesterday, Lindy Barber released a blog post explaining why, because of a drug testing rule, she will never compete in CrossFit again, not even the Open.
— “I will never compete in a CrossFit sanctioned event again. I won’t do the open, the team series, any sanctionals events, the lift off, anything. You wanna know why?
— “It’s not because I hate CrossFit. It’s not because I don’t do CrossFit anymore. It’s not because I hate the changes they have made to the competition and I am boycotting it. It’s because CrossFit told me not to. I was told that I was not allowed to participate anymore.
Dani Speegle on Becoming an Elite CrossFit Athlete — Dani Speegle, who was just named the female American national champion in the 2019 CrossFit Open, joined FLoElite to discuss how she found CrossFit and how she feels about her quick rise to the top.
— “I definitely can’t complain. I went in with the goal of top 20. I thought that was realistic. I didn’t think top five and winning U.S. was possible until the final week when I realized it was. That was a really nice surprise. I’m really happy with my performance and can’t complain at all. I think the Open had everything that could challenge athletes. It was awesome. I think the Open was beautifully written this year.”
Teresa Trojanowski Reflects After the Age Group Online Qualifier — Games athlete Teresa Trojanowski writes, “This past weekend, the Age Group Online Qualifier did not go as I’d hoped or expected. It was an emotional and frustrating weekend, where I just couldn’t get my body to perform the way I think it’s capable of.
— “I think we’ve probably all had a moment where we go, ‘But if I’m not successful/the best/etc at this thing I’ve been working on, then what is the point of doing it?’
— “Do I think that the meaning of my life is to be really fit? NO. Am I here on this earth to simply pursue my own personal fitness goals? NO. I think we are created for relationships, to give back to he world, and to glorify God with our lives. Perhaps CrossFit is a means to do those things, and if that’s the case, then having a poor performance does not make me a failure at, or unable to do, those other things.”

“Invictus Taps Hayley Murillo to Replace Loehner,” by Justin LoFranco, Morning Chalk Up
Late last week, CrossFit Invictus newcomer Chantelle Loehner announced that CrossFit informed her she tested positive for a banned substance at the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge. Invictus X won the April Sanctional and secured themselves an invite to the CrossFit Games.
Invictus X has brought on Hayley Murillo to replace Chantelle Loehner and is scheduled to compete at the Brazil CrossFit Championship hoping to earn another invite to the CrossFit Games.
If Loehner’s B sample comes back positive, Invictus’ win at the Mid-Atlantic Sanctional will be invalidated and Team MisFit — Travis Williams, Roy Gamboa, Jenn Smith and Alexis Johnson — will receive the invite. MisFit is currently scheduled to compete at the Rogue Invitational along with Mayhem Freedom and Invictus Boston.
Historically, B sample requests don’t usually end in the athlete’s favor. At best, testing positive for a banned substance results in a two-year ban from competition; at worst, it’s a four-year ban.
Invictus is wasting no time putting a new team together to make another run at qualifying. It will likely be another few weeks before Loehner’s B sample results are confirmed and a conclusion is reached.
Invictus X is heading down to Brazil next week to compete at the Brazil CrossFit Championship. They’ve tapped Hayley Murillo to replace Chantelle Loehner.
Invictus teams have competed in nearly every Sanctional this season.
