EAST, SOUTH REGIONALS: DAY TWO RECAP

INJURED.

Seven male athletes now have withdrawn from the East Regional due to injuries: Alex Vigneault, Christian Harris, Corey Lunney, Lucas Parker, Kyle Cant, Albert-Dominic Larouche and Chase Smith. Additionally, during Event 2 warmups, Nick Paladino felt a pop in his pectoral and was diagnosed with a slight tear. He has managed to continue competing.

Albert-Dominic Larouche: “Ten days ago an old hip and back injury resurfaced, which complicated the final weeks of my preparation for the East regionals. I was hoping to be ok for this weekend, but unfortunately that was not the case.”

MAKING IT TO THE GAMES

What’s Killing the Teams?…One word: EACH. Unlike previous Regionals, a minor change was introduced requiring EACH athlete to perform the required reps. For instance, in Event 1 EACH athlete must complete 24 strict handstand push-ups before the next M/F pair can begin. On Day 2, we saw this play out in Event 3 with athletes unable to complete the bar muscle-ups.

FUN FACT #1: Nick Paladino is the youngest Regionals competitor in the East, at 18-years-old.

FUN FACT #2: At 6’1″ and 215 pounds, Tim Paulson is the tallest and second heaviest competitor in the East.

FUN FACT #3: Mathew Fraser racked up his 13th career Regionals event win yesterday.

FUN FACT #4: After Event 3, three athletes (Cody Mooney, Austin Spencer and Max Bragg) from CrossFit MF were placed 4th, 5th and 6th.

“He Got Next?” by Mike Warkentin, CrossFit Games

Mat Fraser needs another CrossFit Games win if he wants access to the Two-Timers Club.

Once inside, he’ll rub knee sleeves with the likes of Rich Froning, Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdottir. He’ll also sip some fine coconut water with masters athletes such as Will Powell and Scott Olson, as well as two-time teen champ Nicholas Paladino.

Paladino, of course, has leveled up and is now a boy among men in this year’s Individual competition—a boy with a 585-lb. deadlift and a desire to win another CrossFit Games title, this time in the open division.

In 2015, Paladino won the Teenage Boys 16-17 Division of the CrossFit Games by taking first in 4 of 7 events and finishing 22 points up on the older Mickael Sarrazin. In 2016, Paladino logged three event wins, three seconds and one third on his way to a 38-point victory over George Sterner and a second straight championship.

When asked what he’d like the next five years to bring, Paladino answers like a guy who likes the view from the top of the podium: “Hopefully another championship or two.”

Before her gastric-bypass surgery on March 23, 2005, 5-foot-11, 38-year-old Tina Goertzen weighed 350 lbs.

Ten months later she weighed 150 lb.

Goertzen’s rapid weight loss came at a cost. She threw up eight times a day and struggled to give her body even a minimal amount of nutrition.

“I kept going back to the doctor, and the doctors were panicking because they didn’t know what to do with me,” Goertzen said. Her doctor told her if she kept losing weight, she’d end up in the hospital with an IV in her arm.

The surgery had its intended effect, and Goertzen has kept the weight off, but she said she wishes she’d found another way to lose the weight.
