Three Key Takeaways From Our Coffee Break Conversation With CrossFit San Jose’s Owner, Lance Miller
Earlier this year, CrossFit San Jose became the first gym to move their classes exclusively online for all their members. Since then, they’ve kept about two-thirds of their membership. Here are 5 key takeaways from our conversation with owner, Lance Miller.
PushPress Goes Above and Beyond for Gym Owners During COVID
The moment COVID-19 hit, PushPress, the popular gym management software company, quickly pivoted their entire team to focus on helping gyms survive the pandemic. Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by gym owners who use their software.
“PushPress reached out to me personally after seeing my Facebook post about being shut down a second time and waived my software fee for 2020,” said Dr. Alli Cain, the owner of ANCHOR Health and Fitness Centre.
“They helped get the cash flow running again (after another company froze his payments) and that has saved my gym from an even more difficult time,” said Morten Lambek, the owner of SPS Gym in Oakland, CA.
PushPress has been “a godsend,” said Reynaldo Rodriguez, the owner of Dominion MMA in San Antonio, TX, who received a $500 grant from PushPress. “The grant came in at the right time. We used it to help families that needed help during COVID,” he added.
Games Athlete Jamie Hagiya Loses and Finds her Fitness during Pandemic
After being a competitive athlete since she was a young child, 2016 CrossFit Games athlete and former Division I basketball player Jamie Hagiya retired from competition in 2019. “After my last year competing at the Games with a team, I was just kind of lost. And I realized I had never really taken a break from training,” said Hagiya, the owner of Torrance Training Lab in California. So she decided to ease off her training and loosen the reins on her diet.
Before she knew it, she was eating out four nights a week,“and eating late at night and fried foods and heavy foods, like noodles. You know, all kinds of delicious things,” she said laughing.
Then COVID-19 hit, her gym closed, and Hagiya found herself stuck at home, isolated, coaching Zoom classes and eating too much. Her training was reduced even further. “I would do little 15 minute workouts here and there, but that was about it,” she said.
Reverse dieting is training your body to eat more while maintaining your weight and it can be a useful tool for someone who has hit a plateau on low calories or has reached a body composition goal. In this episode of the Working Against Gravity podcast, Michael and Adee Cazayoux address who should consider reverse dieting and why it works.

The Arnold Press is a classic exercise used to build shoulder boulders by loading the delts through a wide range of motion while maintaining good joint alignment. Thanksgiving may look and feel a bit different this year, but that doesn't mean it has to be any less tasty. Give this super simple stuffing recipe a try. Because it's baked outside the bird, the bread on top gets crispy while the inside is custardy and soggy. And here's a tip: don't cut the bread into chunks, rip it -- the edges give the crispy bits more textures.
There were no correct responses to Friday’s trivia question — which “Most Improved” CrossFit Games Award winners have been on the Games Podium in their careers. The correct answer was Lukas Högberg and Kari Pearce. Lukas at the 2018 Games (both) and Kari won the award at the 2016 Games and made the podium in 2020.
Today’s question: Which two athletes have competed in the most CrossFit Games Affiliate/Team competitions?
Ryan Sowder does a 2 position clean at 325 pounds.
Our first community round-up this week highlights two competitions doing good work and an annual Thanksgiving race:
Outwork Addiction Competition: On Saturday, Hype Delray in Delray Beach, FL held a competition called “Outwork Addiction,” which was especially meaningful to several of the coaches there, who have battled substance use disorder. The proceeds of the competition benefited Temperance Training, a program that offers free CrossFit classes to people who have 24-hours of sobriety or more.
CrossFit Fort Vancouver Championship: On January 8-15, 2021 the CrossFit Fort Vancouver Championship will go down in Fort Vancouver, WA. It’s a partner competition with Rx, scaled, and masters division and registration goes live on December 1. The competition also serves as a fundraiser for the Northwest Youth Fitness Foundation, whose mission it is to improve the health and fitness of local youth. Register now.
