Buttery Bros Not Making Upcoming CrossFit Games Documentary
In a sit down interview with Morning Chalk Up, the Buttery Bros’ Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers revealed that they will not be producing the upcoming documentary on the 2021 CrossFit Games.
The dynamic duo’s recent release of Resurgence — the documentary about the 2020 Games — was the number one downloaded movie on iTunes in America, and eight other countries.
One big thing: It shouldn’t come as a big surprise considering that CrossFit prefers to produce their own media in house.
Up until the 2019 Games documentary, CrossFit produced all other documentaries like Froning, A Decade of Fitness, Redeemed and Dominant, etc. in-house.
It wasn’t until Cannon and Sawyers were fired in the fall of 2018 and subsequently started their own media endeavor that CrossFit began sharing creative control over the documentary with outside media.
The big picture: By no means does this mean that the Buttery Bros are done making documentaries. Privately, they’ve shared ideas they have in the works and might even have teased in their most recent episode (minute 22). More importantly, it’s more likely we’ll see more creative projects from the dynamic duo without having their hands tied by CrossFit corporate and can gain more creative freedom by being independent.
So who’s producing the next doc? In a word: CrossFit. But, more specifically Mariah Moore, a longtime member of the CrossFit Games media team who “helped co-direct Fittest On Earth: A Decade of Fitness, as well as The Redeemed and Dominant” with Cannon and Sawyers.

Heart rate data from the Games: Okay, we have to admit we’re geeking out over this a bit–WHOOP has publicized data from Haley Adams and Team Mayhem Freedom from the CrossFit Games. During the entire Games, Mayhem Freedom’s average strain was “only” 16.6 and Adams’ lowest recovery was 19% on day three.
Bethany Shadburne back to fitness: After testing positive for COVID-19 prior to the start of the CrossFit Games, Bethany updated us on how she’s been feeling and her journey to get back into the gym to train. She said she’s feeling about 80% of the way but still doesn’t have her smell and taste and is feeling super tired.
Shadburne: “It still hits me every once in a while that I didn’t get to compete last weekend but I still feel like I got protected from something…seemed like a lot of people were dropping like flies last week competing, there’s a lot of injuries and stuff so who knows, maybe I was getting protected from maybe an injury that would have taken me out from a long time…”
CrossFit French Throwdown 2022: The 10th edition is returning in June 2022 as a community event but this time, they will be working with Aladin. Aladin is an organization aimed at achieving the dream of sick children and 100% of the process will go towards making those dreams happen.
CrossFit Games 2023 in Miami? That’s what local CrossFit affiliate owner and veteran in the community since 2009, Jessica Bergman wants, anyways. In an article, she makes a plea of why Miami would be the perfect location to host the Games given their long history of putting on big events including Wodapalooza. However, they are likely too late to the party as a Letter of Intent to Bid needed to be submitted to CrossFit by July 1.

SNEAK PEAK: Early Release of the Sara Sigmundsdottir x WIT Collection
Details have finally emerged about the new apparel line being designed by Sara Sigmundsdottir, launching January 2022 under the WIT apparel brand. However, an early 17-piece collection will be released August 19.
One big thing: The Sigmundsdottir x WIT collection represents an unprecedented involvement by an athlete in the design process with an apparel brand. This goes far beyond color and shading selections we’ve seen in designs from other companies.
Sigmundsdottir herself, has been uniquely involved, down to the form, function and purpose of specific design pieces.
She has also worked extensively for months with the apparel designers sorting through fabrics, materials, cuts and design affectations.
In her own words: “I’m very involved. People are like ‘oh so you’re getting your collection, are you choosing the colors?’ I’m like no, I’m designing the thing,” Sara Sigmundsdóttir told us in an exclusive interview.
“I’ve always been super creative. All of a sudden I get an idea for a sports bra and I just have to draw it up on drawing paper at the office. Then I sent it to the designers with like ‘this is my idea today’ and then they come with a comeback like ‘this is a great idea, but we would need to do it like this.”
Launch details: The signature new line will officially launch in January 2022, but a special early release will be available for purchase at an invite-only launch party at WIT’s London flagship store on Thursday, August 19th at 7:00 PM GMT.
A 17 piece apparel collection and Sigmundsdottir branded accessories will be available at the early launch, as well as online in limited quantities.
Models will be showcasing the line on a fashion meets function catwalk featuring a mix of Sara’s friends from Iceland.
Not on the invite list? On August 21, there will be a meet and greet with Sara.

The 2021 Games format is the way of the future, cuts included
I will start this by saying that in general, I am generally not a fan of cuts at the Games given the workload from the athlete required to get there, and statistical anomalies that occur as a result of scoring format changes. However, cuts have long been a part of the Games, and I think this season was a happy medium between giving athletes plenty of leash to prove themselves, and trimming the field to add drama, significance, and consequence throughout the week.
