Happy Friday and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. Now that the 2020 CrossFit Games season has wrapped, it’s time to take a look at the final season earnings; Patrick Clark does just that and gets behind the numbers. And, with her jaw-dropping performance in “Atalanta” and a podium finish at the Games, where does Kari Pearce sit in the pantheon of American women CrossFit athletes?

Set a Reminder: Tommy Marquez sat down with five-time CrossFit Games champion, Mathew Fraser, after winning his fifth straight title in the most dominant performance of any CrossFitter in history. The video drops on the Morning Chalk Up YouTube Channel at 5 PM PT today!

Top 10 Athlete Payouts for the 2019-2020 CrossFit Games Season

The 2020 CrossFit Games came to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon and with it the tumultuous season that saw the COVID-19 pandemic change the landscape of the sport.

We have compiled, to the best of our knowledge, the 2019-2020 season final payout list. This list factors in prize money awarded for the Games, the Open, individual Sanctional paydays and event win bonuses.

One big thing: It was going to be a banner year for total athlete payouts based on the increase of Sanctional events from 15 during the 2018-2019 season to 28 for this season. However only ten of the Sanctionals went off before the pandemic eventually forced organizers to cancel.

Because Nobody Likes a Hangover 😖

Because Nobody Likes a Hangover 😖

We’ve all been there. You had a great WOD and stuck to your meal prep all day… but you could really go for a drink. You don’t want to undo all your hard work, and now, you don’t have to.

Ritual is a non-alcoholic spirit that’s perfect when you want a satisfying evening cocktail, but want to perform at your best the next day.

Sometimes it’s not the alcohol, but the act of making and sipping a great drink that helps you wind down after a long day of work-from-home. Sometimes you just want the ritual, without the alcohol. Simply substitute 1:1 in place of tequila, whiskey or gin for all the flavor, without the alcohol or calories.

Give it a shot.

The 2020 (CrossFit) Intimacy Games: You’ll Never See it Like This Again

Sam Kwant frantically rips his goggles off his face and swim cap off his head, visibly writhing in pain, as he attempts to recover from Event 10: Swim N’ Stuff in the CrossFit Games finals.

During past Games, music would have been playing, and thousands of fans cheering loudly, but not today. In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, three million-plus fans are instead glued to their screens, soaking in the quiet atmosphere on the competition floor from the comfort of their homes.

Affiliates Battle Wildfire Ash and Smoke Amidst Pandemic in California

Over 8,200 fires have burned more than 4 million acres in California. And affiliates are being affected.

  • “Surviving the pandemic has been tough, and a fire season that started in August is an additional onslaught,” said Beth Rypins, owner of Wine Country CrossFit located in downtown Napa.

One big thing: As fires rage, air quality decreases. And in a state where gyms are facing massive restrictions due to COVID-19 — think outdoor only or 10% capacity limits indoors — this is a problem.

Garlic Rosemary Pork Chops

Pork chops get a bad rap, they are often overcooked and dry. But, this recipe for seared and oven-baked, bone-in pork chops sets you up for juicy, tender and flavorful protein. Some key tips are to make sure that the chops are bone-in and thick-cut, season them well and use a very hot skillet for the sear.

Community Round-Up

In our round-up today, we have some cool stories about gym openings, expansion and new class offerings in the global affiliate community:

  • Five-Year Membership for Gym Naming Contest: The Intune Fitness Collective in Whanganui, NZ has opened a new gym and are asking community members to suggest names for its CrossFit affiliation. The owners have created a contest and the winning submitter will receive a free five-year membership to the gym. There are only two rules: it has to have “CrossFit” in the name and it can’t “get the gym in trouble.”
  • Tween Class: Chimney Rock CrossFit in Bound Brok, NJ will begin offering a “tweens class” for athletes aged 9-13. The class will focus on the basics of exercise in a fun group environment. It will be offered Monday through Thursday, 4:00-4:45 pm.
  • Tire Shop to become CrossFit gym: In Hartlepool, England, a former tire shop has been transformed into a CrossFit gym. Named Exortus CrossFit, the new box will be headed by Ashley Mcfee, the current head coach at CrossFit Telic, nearby. It’s open now!
