2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Masters Semifinals Recap
Age Group Semifinals has officially come to a close and while the event didn’t take place in person, the competition was still just as fierce. With legendary names like Rich Froning, Chyna Cho, and Stacie Tovar dotting the leaderboard, the masters divisions might be the most competitive they’ve ever been. Here’s a look at what went down this weekend and who may have punched their ticket to the 2023 CrossFit Games.
Note: All scores currently remain unofficial until finalized by CrossFit on May 10th. We recognize that there have been errors in the CrossFit Games leaderboard and are currently reporting off the unofficial scoreboard.
35-39 Division:
Men:
Rich Froning proved once again that he’s not one to mess with. After placing second in Quarterfinals behind Sam Dancer, he came back to Semifinals and currently sits in first place.
Other individual Games veterans who managed to land themselves inside the cutline include Scott Panchik, Frederik Aegidius, and Elijah Muhammad.
We will likely also see the return of last year’s 35-39 division champion, Bryan Wong, who finished third overall this weekend.
A Good Reminder:Haley Adams shared an IG reel with an important reminder, “Exercise is a privilege, not a punishment.”
Adams: “One of my greatest rediscoveries in my time off from competition is my appreciation for exercise. I had developed such a negative relationship with training in so many ways, and going back to fundamentals gives purpose to my movement again.”

Fit 4 Recovery: Serving Adaptive Athletes Since 2014
In 2014, Josh Nix started working at a facility dedicated to offering exercise-based service for those with neurological impairments due to spinal cord injuries. But the facility didn’t last long.
It closed within a few months, and Nix, an exercise scientist and long-time CrossFit athlete and coach, didn’t want to abandon his adaptive clients, so he talked to his affiliate owner and began training a handful of clients at his CrossFit gym.
“The place shut down on a Friday and we started working that at the CrossFit (gym) that next Tuesday,” he remembered of how he was thrown right into it.
Nine years later, Nix is still working with adaptive athletes of all kinds through his program Fit 4 Recovery, which is housed at his gym, CrossFit Hopkins in Hopkins, MN.
“CrossFit Hopkins is a place where pretty much anybody can workout, (even) if your life has been impacted due to a catastrophic event…We find a safe and effective dose of exercise for (everyone),” he said of his mission.
Nix’s Story
Getting his program up and running in 2014 was a challenge from the start.
Meet RX Smart Gear's Sole Sponsored Athlete: Olympic Swimmer Michael Andrew
A few years back, jump rope manufacturer RX Smart Gear had one of–if not the bigger roster of sponsored athletes in the CrossFit space. The nearly 50 athletes connected to the brand received stipends, gear, financial assistance, and specialized coaching in exchange for promoting the brand to their fans and on social media. This strategy was largely successful: RX Smart Gear is a household name in the CrossFit world and an easy go-to for a new rope.
However, something about this system didn’t sit right with CEO David Newman. Because athletes were required to post content promoting their products in order to keep their sponsor deal, he felt that the posts felt manufactured and more out of obligation than an actual passion for the project. So, the team restructured their sponsorship plan until they only had one athlete.
