Tia-Clair Toomey’s Australian Bobsled Team Qualifies for 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

Tia-Clair Toomey’s Australian Bobsled Team Qualifies for 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

Tia-Clair Toomey’s dream of competing at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics just got one step close to becoming a reality. On Monday, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) released their final rankings, with her driver Ashleigh Werner ranking 20th in the world, placing them in an Olympic qualifying spot.

One big thing: The feat could put her in unchartered territory in terms of multi-disciplinary athletics. If Toomey is selected for the team, she will become the first active CrossFit Games athlete to qualify for the summer and winter Olympics (in different sports). If she qualifies for the 2022 CrossFit Games, that will add another record, qualifying for the Olympics and Games again in the same year.

  • 2016 CrossFit Games: 1st
  • 2016 Summer Olympics: 14th in the 58kg weightlifting division
  • 2017 CrossFit Games: 1st
  • 2018 Commonwealth Games: Gold in the 58kg weightlifting division
  • 2018 CrossFit Games: 1st
  • 2019 CrossFit Games: 1st
  • 2020 CrossFit Games: 1st
  • 2021 CrossFit Games: 1st

In response to qualifying, the Olympics’ Instagram account posted: “Tia – teach us everything you know please!”

Side note: We’re not even counting the other off-season competitions she’s won.

What happens next: Technically it is Werner who has secured the Olympic spot as the rankings are based on the driver of the 2-person bobsled. Brakewomen, which Toomey is, are often traded out during the season and the final selection will be left up to Australia.

  • The five-time reigning and defending CrossFit Games champion has been Werner’s brakewoman during the last few races and has been training with her exclusively.
  • The Winter Olympics take place in China from Feb. 4-20, concluding just four days before the start of the 2022 CrossFit Open.

Update on Sara Sigmundsdottir, who withdrew from Wodapalooza on Friday out of an abundance of caution:

  • Sigmundsdottir: “I had a big scare in Event 3 on Friday at Wodapalooza and therefore the last 72 hours have been insanely stressful. I needed to have an MRI scan done on my knee and then I needed to count on help from AMAZING PEOPLE in various locations all around the world to examine it and determine what situation I was faced with.”
  • “Thankfully I still have a fighting chance for my 2022 CrossFit Games season to be ON and I am prepared to do WHATEVER IT TAKES for that to happen!!!”

Masters Fitness Collective is partnering with Masters HQ to offer the winner of each division an automatic entry to the MFC CrossFit Championship.

  • Masters HQ takes place in Melbourne, Australia July 9-10, 2022.
  • This is the second such partnership announced in recent weeks with winners of each Wodapalooza masters division also receiving invites.
  • MFC CrossFit Championship takes place October 14-16, 2022.

BOA Nutrition signs Hunter McIntyre and Katie Knight.

CrossFit Games Employees Warned of E. coli in Lake Monona By Public Health Officials, Athletes Got Sick, One Required IV

CrossFit Games employees received phone calls and written reports from the Madison & Dane County Public Health department from July 27-29 of last year informing them the E. coli levels in Lake Monona, where last summer’s Games swim events took place, “does not meet current EPA health standards.”

“We did everything we could to inform them of the levels and the risks associated with it,” said Morgan Finke, communications coordinator for Madison & Dane County Public Health.

The CrossFit Games team went through with the swim event in Lake Monona last July despite the advisories, and two athletes stated on the record they believe the water gave them E. coli and made them sick.

Canadian Samuel Cournoyer said he sought medical attention from the CrossFit Games medical team, who surmised his illness was due to E. coli poisoning from the swim event. Cournoyer said he was put on an intravenous drip, as recommended by CrossFit Games medical staff, to replenish his electrolytes and reduce dehydration because he wasn’t able to keep food down for the large majority of the weekend.

“When I heard I wasn’t the only person who was sick from the lake, I was like, ‘That stupid lake again,’” Cournoyer said. “It seems so disrespectful to put the athletes in the lake.”

18-year-old Emily Avery Competes at Wodapalooza after Losing Arm in Accident

18-year-old Emily Avery Competes at Wodapalooza after Losing Arm in Accident

Emily Avery started CrossFit in August of 2020 after being involved in various sports her entire childhood. As an active teen, 18-year-old Avery never could have imagined life any different until a near-fatal car accident left her without her left arm. But determined to stay involved with CrossFit, Avery punched her ticket to Wodapalooza just three months after losing her arm.

Before the accident, Avery picked up CrossFit because it provided her with variance and excitement in training that she craved. Quickly, she found her place at the Pit Fitness Ranch and started training with their ever-growing group of teen athletes. By the summer of 2021, the rising high school senior was on her way to stringing together muscle-ups, training with experienced athletes, and having a solid group of gym friends.

  • “I went from zero to eleven strict pull-ups in a row in a month, and I was super happy with that! And I made my first muscle-up in May, and I was super stoked,” Avery remembers.

As one of the biggest names in the sport for teen athletes, Triple River CrossFit, the large number of like-minded peers provided Avery with a community that was integral to her experience.

  • “They’re my family. It’s fun doing community WODs and having people to train with, especially when they’ve competed (at big competitions before). They’ve been doing CrossFit for so much longer than I have, and I can definitely learn from them.”
