CrossFit to Allow Transgender Athletes to Compete
Tonight, at Woof’s Bar in Madison, WI, CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman announced that beginning with the 2019 CrossFit Games season transgender athletes will be allowed to compete in the gender division in which they identify.
“In the 2019 CrossFit competitive season, starting with the Open, transgender athletes are welcome to participate in the division with which they identify,” said Greg Glassman. “This is the right thing to do. CrossFit believes in the potential, capacity, and dignity of every athlete. We are proud of our LGBT community, including our transgender athletes, and we want you here with us.”
While the exact policies are still being metered out, one individual close to decision making process said that CrossFit will likely mirror International Olympic Committee’s established policies and guidelines. Currently, athletes may only compete in the gender assigned to them at birth.
On January 8, 2018, CrossFit HQ published the 2018 rulebook which outlines all specific rules governing each stage of the CrossFit Games season. Fans should expect all details to be included in the 2019 Rulebook.
At the event, Greg Glassman presented the OutWOD Foundation a check for $10,000 from the CrossFit Foundation.
