Like everyone in the CrossFit world, when five-time reigning champion Mat Fraser announced he was walking away from the sport at his peak, the consensus was shock. Finland’s Jonne Koski, who narrowly missed the final five portion of the 2020 CrossFit Games, said his reaction was similar.

“Mat was by far the best athlete in the field and dominated the competition for years and to be honest I was surprised to see him announce his retirement,” said the 26-year-old. “Him retiring basically opens up another spot in the podium and I believe more athletes will put a target for the top of that podium now. Even with Mat being out it’s still a very competitive field and there are so many good athletes that can take the win and I’m sure we’ll see a good battle in July.”
