“Age is Just a Number,” Mal O’Brien Sits in Third at Granite Games After Day One
The question everyone has been asking going into this weekend is can the teens prove themselves on the competition floor. We’ve seen 17-year-old Mal O’Brien do some extraordinary things in the comfort of her own gym, and now, we can say the same when it comes to in-person competition against some of the fittest individuals in the world..
In Event One, Mal O’Brien hit a 185-pound snatch putting her in 12th place overall. This being just ten pounds under her one rep max of 195 that she hit back in December of 2020.
When she took the field for Event Two, the thruster run event, she came out hot and never cooled off. In the two previous heats, athletes that had an early lead were not able to hold it through the entirety of the workout. But for O’Brien, that’s exactly what she did. She took off ahead of all the other athletes and never once lost the lead, even with one no rep on a thruster. She finished first with the closest athlete still nearly 20 seconds behind her.
After day one, O’Brien has secured a third-place ranking, putting her in a comfortable spot early on in the weekend.
The bottom line: Typically we’d see rookie mistakes from younger athletes and even a bit of stage fright when taking the field. But so far, Mal O’Brien has proven that age really is just a number, and she’s someone we all need to keep our eye on.
