For the next installment of our five-part series to all things Austin while attending the 2022 Rogue Invitational, we bring you arguably the most important guide: where to grab a cup of joe (or are food recommendations the most important? Hard to say).

“The entire hospitality industry in Austin is coming into its own,” said Paul Oveisi, co-owner of Cosmic Coffee and Beer Garden. “A lot of the best culinary and beverage creatives have been flocking to Austin because of its great culture, fun lifestyle and exponential growth.”

With an abundance of options to choose from in the vibrant city, we’ve done our best to narrow down the top places to satisfy your caffeine addiction.

1. Paperboy

1203 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702

Austin-local and CrossFit competition MC Bella Martin starts this list off strong with her go-to.

“The best place to get a coffee and sit for a little (while) would be Paperboy off East 12th,” Martin said. “It’s my favorite place in the entire city for coffee and breakfast.”

Paperboy has a plethora of delicious breakfast items on the menu ranging from toasts and bowls, to classic selections and gluten-free pastries. Reservations are available (ps: they have an adorable patio!) and online ordering is available ahead of time.

2. Summer Moon
200 University Blvd Unit 110 Round Rock, TX 78665 (multiple locations)

Appropriately named according to their website, Summer Moon, founded in Texas, is striving to create “an experience to be shared through coffee and atmospheres that inspire the warmth of cozy evenings under a summer moon.”

Aside from the adorable decor and abundance of locations throughout the greater Austin-area, they’re also known for their wood-fired coffee roasting process, which creates a smooth coffee flavor.

Moon Milk is their proprietary, signature secret seven-ingredient creamer that you can add to any drink; you can order Summer Moon (coffee with mostly Moon Milk), or 3/4, 1/2 or 1/4 “moon” in any of your drinks. Try it, and thank us later!

3. Cosmic Coffee and Beer Garden

121 Pickle Rd, Austin, TX 78704

Located in South Austin with convenient access to the freeway, Cosmic Coffee and Beer Garden is a must for large group gatherings. If you and the squad want to ease into your morning before heading up to Dell Diamond, stop by Cosmic for a huge, dog-friendly patio accompanied by three food truck options. And, while you’re at it, you can feel good about supporting the environment.

“We’re unique in that we’ve integrated our sustainability and garden setting into our program. We home-grow some of the herbs and botanicals we use in our beverage on site and in turn, we do intensive on site composting which returns fertility to our grounds and gardens,” Oveisi said. “And we nurture a wildlife habitat on site which improves our micro-environment and creates a beautiful backdrop with a botanic garden-esque backdrop.”

As for narrowing down the menu?

“Our customer favorite is the Frozen Boozy Coffee,” Oveisi suggests. “Or for a non-alcoholic fave, either the Dawn Patrol Latte or Liquid Sunshine!”

4. Better Half Coffee and Cocktails

406 Walsh St, Austin, TX 78703

Although Better Half doesn’t open until 9AM (8AM on the weekends), the slow start is worth it. With unique coffee options like a Chagaccino and a Caramom Clove latte, and unique breakfast items like chilled soba noodles and a chicken biscuit, it’s a slam dunk in central Austin. Plus, with 4-stars on Yelp in a city known for its food and beverages, 400+ people can’t be wrong.

5. Radio Coffee and Beer

4204 Menchaca Rd, Austin, TX 78704

Located in the South Lamar area, Radio has been serving up brews and good vibes since 2014. The woodsy indoor feel is accompanied by a huge outdoor seating area, next to some of the best food trucks in town (get the biscuit breakfast sandwich from Briscuits, you won’t regret it!). And, for the morning folks, Radio opens at 7AM daily.

Honorable mention: Strong Coffee Company

The instant coffee giant, founded and headquartered in the Lone Star state, will be serving up cups to get your fix on-site at the competition. We love the Daybreaker Latte, which has 15mg of Grass-Fed Collagen Protein, 5mg of Coconut/MCT Oil, 100mg of L-Theanine and all the cocoa, creamy, caffeinated taste you desire, without the gluten or lactose.

Our guide to where to eat, grab a drink and get active outside are still to come, so stay tuned and tell a friend, because this is sure to be a fun weekend ahead.

“Hosting Rogue is just a way that Austin can showcase the community that has been cultivated here,” Martin said. “There are not many large-scale CrossFit events in Texas so having this in our backyard makes it more of a can’t-miss opportunity for spectators and athletes alike.”
