After a respectable sixth place finish on the 160-floor stair climb at the Burj Khalifa on Day 1, Slovakia’s Karin Frey started Day 2 in a big way, snagging back-to-back event wins at the Dubai FItness Championship in the UAE.

The details: Frey, a three-time CrossFit Games athlete, dominated Event 2—a max hang clean—effortlessly lifting her way to 122 kg (268.4 pounds).

  • Frey was the only woman to hit that weight, so she didn’t attempt another lift, however, it looked as though she had a lot more in the tank.
  • She came back just a couple hours later with a come-from-behind win on Event 3—a three-round, decreasing rep workout of calories on the SkiErg, toes-to-bar and barbell snatches that increased in load with each round.
  • Frey was in the middle of the pack the entire workout, but made the final snatches at 135 pounds look easy, as she power snatched all 10 of them quickly, while other athletes had to begin squat snatching and resting between reps. She took the lead for the first time at the very end of the workout, passing Jamie Simmonds and Andrea Solberg, finishing (unofficially) in 16:00, 15 seconds ahead of Solberg.

The big picture: Frey will (unofficially) enter the final event of the day as the leader and with an workout that looks promising for her. Event 4 is an elimination-style event with Echo Bike calories and legless rope climbs, and considering Frey won the legless rope climb event at the 2022 Lowlands Throwdown Semifinal, it seems as though the lead might just be hers to lose.
