The 2023 CrossFit Open has begun. The first workout of the 2023 season — Workout 23.1 — is a repeat of Workout 14.4. It’s a high-volume test of grip and work capacity in a 14-minute chipper. The workout was announced on Feb. 16, 2023, in Madrid, Spain, at 3 p.m. EST. Athletes’ scores will be listed on the CrossFit leaderboard. The movement standards and workout description for workout 23.1 can be viewed on the CrossFit Games website.
Participating athletes worldwide have until 8:00 p.m. EST on Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, to submit their videos for review. The Workout 23.1 announcement can be seen in the video below, courtesy of the CrossFit Games YouTube channel. CrossFitters Björgvin Karl Gudmundsson, Lazar Đukić, Laura Horvath, and Gabriela Migała were the first elite athletes to perform the workout:
Men — 20-pound ball, 10-foot target, 135-pound cleans | Women — 14-pound ball, nine-foot target, 95-pound cleans
Each athlete’s score is the number of reps scored within the 14-minute window. This is the same workout for all Age Groups with the exception of lower weights in the cleans for ages 55-59, 60-64, and 65+ (women lift 65 pounds, men lift 115 pounds).
Men — 10-pound ball, 10-foot target, 45-pound cleans | Women — Six-pound ball, nine-foot target, 35-pound cleans
Per the CrossFit Games website, “The load is a suggested starting point. If you are completing all of the tests in the Foundations division, you are free to decrease or increase the load as your skill level allows.”
