Dave Castro Addresses Cuts, Next Games Location and if He’s Here to Stay
Several weeks ago the news dropped that Justin Bergh was leaving CrossFit HQ and Dave Castro would step in as General Manager of Sport. Castro has been in and out of leadership roles at the corporate level, but assured the community on Sunday that he is here to stay.
When asked if he’s in the role for good, Castro said, “I hope so, I sure f***ing hope so.”
The 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games has concluded, but not without some lingering questions, such as the two rounds of cuts athletes had to go through and the fact that individual athletes didn’t see a barbell workout, other than the Olympic Total, until the last day of competition.
Castro attended a press conference alongside the first place finishers in the mens, womens, and team division on Sunday night following the award ceremony where he addressed several of the questions the Morning Chalk Up team, and likely CrossFit fans alike may have on a range of topics, including where the new home for the 2024 Games will be.
On Cuts
- “I don’t think it affected the leaderboard in any negative way. Definitely the fittest people alive were crowned and the right people were crowned,” said Castro.
- “When you look at these two (Laura Horvath and Jeffrey Adler) it’s not a stretch that they should be on top, regardless of what we program, they should be at this stage. Where they’re at physically and with their performance we could put 4 or 5 different sets of programming and the outcome would likely be the same.”
- “It has to be well-rounded and not biased to one specific realm.”
On the Limited Barbell Tests for Individuals
- “In regards to no barbell, that’s kind of a unique expression that we’ve done similar stuff in the past.”
- “We had Regionals where we had no barbell so we definitely like to push the envelope on that and try new things.”
- Adler, the 2023 Fittest Man on Earth had something to add: “I like barbells but it seems like I don’t need them.”
On the New Games Location in 2024
- “We took a look at a lot of different areas and a lot of different venues, locations that would be an ideal host for a variety of reasons.”
- “And the location we’re leaning towards or working with will be a great host for the CrossFit Games in the near future.”
- “I think laying the groundwork and foundation for being able to take this overseas is some of what we’re doing in the future years. We will eventually take it overseas sooner rather than later but just not yet.”
The bottom line: Castro may not have been direct in the most pressing question, the new home of the Games, but it has at least narrowed the spot to somewhere within the U.S. Madison, WI was the home to the sport for six years and finding a new home base is not an easy task, but hopefully we’ll get an answer soon enough.
