Nothing to Lose: Cole Learn Turns World Championship Heartbreak Into Fuel
For HYROX athlete Cole Learn, his 2025/2026 season was one of extremes. Ahead of the World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, he had just signed a contract with Adidas and was a major contender to be crowned the new HYROX champion.
But the race he had trained for all year ended just after it began.
What Happened
As the starting clock counted down to zero, Learn shot out of the gate at a blistering pace, positioning himself at the front of the pack for the first kilometer. The first station, a 1000-meter ski, was one he knew he could finish with ease. One of the best skiers in the field, Learn was already making moves early in the race.
But just as his meters were clicking from 999 to 1,000, he stepped off the ski platform. By the time he had both feet off, the screen had clicked over, and his judge urged him to continue. However, he was intercepted by a head judge, who hurried over to escort him off the course, immediately disqualifying him from the race for stepping off the ski platform too soon.
- He had made a grievous mistake, and for him, a common nightmare among professional racers had come true – a DQ at the World Championships – at the very first station.
The community was split, but not evenly. A majority of fans, friends, and his fellow athletes were devastated on Learn’s behalf, calling for more consistency in penalties and disqualifications. Similar situations had occurred earlier in the season, with some athletes, like Learn, being immediately disqualified from the race, while others received a time penalty.
When speaking with Learn recently, it was apparent that the race months ago still caused substantial heartbreak.
- “Stockholm was the most difficult adversity I have ever faced in athletics, but it is nothing new to what I have experienced in my life. Directly after the DQ, I felt all the feelings; I was angry at first, and then I broke down crying. I felt like I had been robbed, but was also just so gutted that I couldn’t display the fitness I had worked so hard for.”
- “The hours following, I had some good talks with my friends, family, and coaches, and to be completely honest, I was ready to move on and get ready for the next season by the next morning,” Learn told the Morning Chalk Up.
But while that memory still hits a nerve with Learn, he’s been able to channel his energy into the current season and leave the past behind.
- “To be truthfully honest, I wouldn’t say I have much frustration towards the situation. I have always been an athlete and person who is great at moving on from things. I definitely still think about it during training and let it fuel those tough sessions, though. It’s one of those things where I want it to be a good reminder for me, but I don’t want it to be something that sits over me and influences me much,” Learn said.
After the World Championships, he sat down with his coach, and together they decided they needed to continue training and get straight back into racing and competition.
- “We felt my fitness was in a really good spot, and if we continued pushing, we could have a great chance of qualifying early in the season. The goal is to qualify for Worlds at one of the first two majors, and then take a small off-season throughout December and January,” Learn said.
Revenge Tour
Adhering to his plan, Learn set out to race again as much as possible, beginning shortly after Worlds. He cheekily dubbed this circuit his “Revenge Tour,” which began the first week of August, when he flew to Japan to race at HYROX Chiba. There, he won his division in 54:37.
Then, just days later, he flew to China for HYROX Shenzhen, where he won again with an even faster time of 53:30.
- “Winning the races in Asia meant a lot to me,” Learn said, “for the simple fact that I was able to demonstrate the level of fitness I had brought to the World Championships. Only a couple of people close to me knew what I was truly capable of. It is a nice feeling being able to show the world ‘hey, this is what you’re up against this year.’”
What’s Next
Learn shared with us that his main goal right now is HYROX Hamburg, an Elite race for the season (previously classified as a Major, which is used to qualify athletes for World Championships) That race will take place the last weekend of October. Then in Spring of 2027, Learn will compete at HYROX London, which is also an Elite race this year.
- “If I still need to qualify, then I will be going to the next; I think it’s Bangkok. I’ll do Vegas as well because it’s close,” Learn said.
In the meantime, he has some Doubles races coming up this month with his Canadian partner.
While Learn has no resentment about what happened in Stockholm, it has seemingly fueled him to tick off win after win, country by country. If it’s given him any sort of edge, it sure is working to his advantage.
- “I don’t hold any negative feelings towards the situation, but I also know that nothing worse could happen in a race, so why not line up with nothing to lose? I believe that mindset is huge for getting that extra 5% out of yourself, and if I can line up calm and collected for each race, I’m going to be tough to beat!”
