Gymreapers WZA SoCal Roster Complete for New “Battle of the Camps” Competition
The third annual Gymreapers Wodapalooza SoCal is just days away, and this year a new competition has been added to the weekend: the “Battle of the Camps,” replacing previous years’ TYR Cup.
If you missed it, the elite showcase, set in Huntington Beach, CA, features four teams this year instead of two, with three training camps and one that isn’t.
The prize purse totals $214,000, including payouts for all four camps and the $10,000 Lazar Djukic MVP award. Here’s what the distribution looks like:
- 1st place: $120,000
- 2nd place: $48,000
- 3rd place: $24,000
- 4th place: $12,000

Workouts have been announced, and athletes have already begun mapping out their strategies and even engaging in a little smack-talk. For the first time, CrossFit Crash owner J.R. Howell is in charge of programming.
The Workouts
Athletes will complete 11 workouts over three days, resulting in 16 separate scores. Each workout uses a different format, and teams must choose which athlete will contribute the most. The six formats are as follows:
- Individual – All athletes compete, and scores are totaled. The team with the highest score wins.
- All Hands – All eight team members work together. Think synchronized movements or a worm.
- Spotlight – One man and one woman are nominated by their teammates based on expertise in weightlifting, gymnastics, and mono-structural movements.
- Miami Team – Teams select three athletes per gender to complete a Gymreapers Wodapalooza Miami team-of-three-style workout.
- CFG Team – Teams select two men and two women, CrossFit Games style, to tackle the workout.
- Captains – Each team’s male and female captains combine forces to try to secure the win.
One workout we’re most looking forward to is “Rob O.” in honor of the late Rob Orlando, which will be held Friday night and is a “Miami Team” format.
The workout is as follows:
For time:
- 30 clean and jerks (300/200 pounds)
Each trio shares one barbell and rotates athletes with a tag at the start line.
Another one we’re excited about is “Divide and Conquer,” which kicks off Saturday. This will be for co-ed pairs and take place on the beach stage and is as follows:
For time:
- Beach run and a 1-ton move
into
- 1 ton move as a team
- (All athletes wear a 5.11 vest)
Each year a similar workout is programmed, where athletes move mixed equipment from one end of the beach to the other. For us, this has always been the best event, with the most drama, and we’re excited that a similar test is returning.
The Weekend
As in years past, in addition to the elite competition, the event will host community divisions – both individual and team. A full vendor village will be set up, featuring activations from over 50 brands, including YETI, Velites, 5.11, and LSKD, just to name a few, with over 20,000 spectators. Tickets are still on sale; snag them here.
FloElite will livestream the entire event.
