Community Gyms Coalition Urges Congress to Act in Response to New D.C. Regulations

On Monday, Washington D.C. Mayor, Muriel Bowser, and DC Health announced “adjustments” to the district’s Phase 2 reopening plan, including lower limits on both indoor and outdoor gatherings in general and requiring restaurants to stop serving alcohol at 10 PM. The only businesses in the city required to completely halt all indoor activities, however, are gyms.

  • Gyms are required to suspend all indoor group exercise classes and outdoor exercise classes of 25 or more. These restrictions go into effect today.

One big thing: In response to these new restrictions, the Community Gyms Coalition (CGC) released a statement asking Congress to “act quickly to provide the fitness industry with direct financial relief that allows gym owners to survive and recover from these types of mandatory COVID-related closures.”

The state of play in D.C.:

  • The D.C. Phase 2 adjustments are in response to a resurgence of the coronavirus in the metro area.

Not That Fit: Training Mentality with WOD Science and Sports Psychologist Jonathan Fader

After my convo with Team USA gymnast, Kara Eaker, I’m feeling more balanced but #NotThatFit overall. There’s still one component of fitness to master, but today, I’m going off script and talking about training mentality with Henning Langer, one of the guys behind WOD Science, and Jonathan Fader, a performance psychologist with SportStrata.

I brought in Langer because I was curious which physiological factor explains why we have to throttle back during a workout. Is it our heart rate? Or the lactic threshold? As it turns out, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

On Sunday Colleen Fotsch was given an early Christmas present, as she was named to the 2020-21 USA Bobsled women’s national team. The announcement capped off a whirlwind five month journey for the two-time CrossFit Games athlete.

One big thing: Fotsch becomes the first American Games athlete named to a winter US national team and gives her the chance to make the 2022 Olympic Team.

The details: Fotsch was one of ten athletes named to the team for the upcoming season and is just one of two newcomers named to the team.

  • She is one of seven brakemen on the team joining Nicole Brungardt, Lauren Gibbs, Sylvia Hoffman, Lolo Jones, Lake Kwaza, and Emily Renna.
  • Gibbs competed at the 2012 and 2013 South Regionals on a team before being recruited out of her CrossFit gym to try out for the US bobsled team. She would go on to win a silver medal with Elana Meyers Taylor at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea.

CrossFit Headquarters Moves To Boulder, Colorado

CrossFit LLC’s headquarters is moving from its original home in Scotts Valley, CA to Boulder, CO. They have signed a lease and intend to move their administrative functions into a 7,100 square foot building in early to mid-December.

The details:

  •  The facility at 2617 Broadway, which used to house the Anthem Branding office, is less than two miles from CrossFit owner Eric Roza’s affiliate, CrossFit Sanitas.
  • Initially, “roughly 15” CrossFit employees will be working from the new HQ, CrossFit’s Head of Communications and Public Policy Andrew Weinstein told the Morning Chalk Up. “Thanks to our friends at Rogue for the equipment,” the new headquarters will also feature a gym, he added.

The Difference between Leg Drive and Extension in Oly Lifts

Here's a great explanation of the leg drive vs extension. If we extend our knees and hips together, we end up with a movement that looks like a strong kettlebell swing. That's great, but in Olympic lifts will have the result of sending the bar away from the body and you get little elevation. Instead, drive against the floor, you still get knee and hip extension, but it's more like a jump. Add a bar and some control and you get a solid snatch or clean pull. Learn more in this short video from Catalyst Athletics.

BIG LEG DRIVE!

TRIVIA

There were no correct responses to Monday’s trivia quesion — which two athletes have competed in the most CrossFit Games Affiliate/Team competitions. The correct answer was Adam Neiffer and Nuno Costa (10 Games for Adam with CrossFit Fort Vancouver and 8 Games for Nuno, all but one with CrossFit Invictus). They both won an Affiliate Cup Championship.

  • Today’s question: Which affiliate/team has competed in every Games Team competition since 2009?

Community Round-Up

In our community round-up today, we are featuring a new unofficial “Murph” record, a great fundraising incentive, and a product to help with an embarrassing problem:

  • New Murph Record: The 24-hour Murph record has been broken unofficially several times this year and on November 14-15, it was broken again. This time, Tanguy Cruz, a 26-year-old athlete from France, recorded 18 rounds of the workout. That means he ran 36 miles and completed 1800 pull-ups, 3600 push-ups and 5,400 air squats.
  • Barbells for Boobs x Rx Smart Gear: Barbells for Boobs is gearing up for “Giving Tuesday,” which takes place on December 1 this year. Rx Smart Gear has partnered with the breast cancer nonprofit organization to provide a limited edition Extreme Velocity Optimized (EVO) Speed Rope for the first 50 people who donate $250 next Tuesday.
  • Moxie Fitness Apparel: Holly Mosack, the co-owner of CrossFit 309 in Peoria Heights, IL saw an issue that some of her female clients were experiencing and decided to do some research. The issue was “stress-induced incontinence” and one in three women suffers from it. However, most athletes do not want to wear something thick that would show through their leggings. So, she created Moxie Fitness Apparel — athletic clothing that includes a moisture-wicking liner and an absorbent center layer made of innovative fiber that isn’t bulky. Learn more.
