“We can never underestimate this truth: No matter who you are, the biggest thing you do in any day is most often going to be a small act of kindness, decency, or love.”- Cory Booker
Mat Fraser’s Career: By The Numbers
Mat Fraser first registered for the CrossFit Open in 2013; he placed 192nd as a very raw athlete in the sport. It was good enough to qualify him for the North East Regional that year, where he placed 5th (at that time less than five athletes per region (typically) qualified for the Games, so he did not make the Games that year).
Those who were present in 2013 at the North East regional probably took notice of young Fraser though; he won the second event of the weekend, and closed the weekend with back to back second place finishes; ultimately he only missed the Games that year by 5 points.
It would seem that his failure to qualify in 2014 sparked a commitment in Fraser to never let that happen again; take a look at his Regional statistics from 2014-2018:

Mat Fraser's Top 5 Moments: 2017 Fibonacci Final
The 2017 CrossFit Games season was a year of new horizons. The sport broke new ground in Madison, Wisconsin as the new home of the CrossFit Games, and for the first time in history, the fittest on earth would be crowned outside of CrossFit’s home state of California.
While the rest of the community had questions about what the Games in the Midwest would look like, one thing that was not in question was Mat Fraser’s place atop the sport after getting over the hump in 2016.
#4 – The Fibonacci Final
There were plenty of competitive highlights at the 2017 Games, and some may have more pizazz to them as far as a social media highlight videos or Games promos might be concerned, but there is arguably no moment more emotive than Fraser’s moment to “drink it all in,” during the Fibonacci Final.
Coming into the final, Fraser was a whopping 210 points clear of 2nd place Brent Fikwoski, which meant as long as Fraser hit the minimum work requirement of two rounds of the handstand push-up, kettlebell deadlift couplet, there was no way he could lose the title.
Updated CrossFit Games Rulebook Clarifies Semifinals, Last-Chance Qualifier
Two of the biggest omissions from the initial release of the 2021 CrossFit Games rulebook was the lack of information on both the Semifinal Championships and Last Chance Qualifier, the final two elements to determine who will compete at this season’s Games. On Tuesday afternoon HQ released an updated version that attempted to answer those questions regarding the 2021 Games qualifying format. Here are the new additions:
The Semifinal Championships: Section 4 of the rulebook addresses the Semifinal Championships qualifying process.
80 total individual athletes will be competing at the 2021 Games, forty each from the men’s and women’s divisions.
76 of those athletes will qualify for the Games through the Semifinals (38 men and 38 women). The Games qualifiers coming from each Semifinal are as follows: (4.13)
North America: Top 5 men and top 5 women advance to the Games from each Semifinal competition.
Europe: Top 5 men and top 5 women advance to the Games from each Semifinal competition.
Oceania: Top 3 men and top 3 women, advance to the Games.
