Boys to Men: Boys Teen Division Still Battling for Legitimacy
Two weeks ago we analyzed the impact that 19-year old Haley Adams had on the girl’s teen division. How her success the last two years after aging-out of the division has given a host of young up and coming teenage girls a blueprint for success sooner rather than later. Conversely the boys teen division has not kept up with their female counterparts in terms of impact to the sport.
One big thing: Since the introduction of the teen division at the 2015 CrossFit Games, it was intended to give fans of the sport a sneak peek into the future stars. It was supposed to act as the farm system for teenage athletes as they developed while also serving as a platform to introduce a younger generation to the sport of fitness.
After six years and five Games showcasing the future of the sport, the boys division has yet to produce the next star for the men’s division.
The details: To date only a few of the boys that have competed at the Games in the teen division have moved unto the big stage to compete with their older counterparts.
Without a Robust Client Assessment, You’re Missing the Mark, Expert Coaches Say
If you’re not assessing clients individually before throwing them into group classes, you’re doing them a disservice, say three highly-respected companies — Active Life Rx, Level Method and OPEX Fitness — all of whom work with coaches and affiliate owners to help their clients move better and deliver more effective training programs.
What they’re saying: A thoughtful initial assessment is necessary to expose a client’s capacity, as well as to determine appropriate movement selection for that individual, both of which are required to lay out an effective long term fitness plan, explained Sean Pastuch, the Founder of the Active Life Rx, Georgia Smith, Coaching Education Advisor at OPEX, and Nathan Holiday, the CEO of Level Method.
Garett Hood: Flat Lines Five Times, Credits CrossFit With Bringing Him Back
On September 23, Garett Hood woke up at 6 AM like normal to feed his Border Collie and Rottweiler. The next thing he knew, he woke up on the floor. Assuming he had just passed out, he started getting ready for work, but as he was outside about to leave, it happened again. “So I went and told my girlfriend, and she was like, ‘You have to go to the hospital,’” said the 40-year-old Hood, a member of CrossFit North Cloud in Concordia, KS for the last four-and-a-half years.
What happened next: Doctors diagnosed Hood with Sick Sinus Syndrome, a condition that interrupts the heart’s natural pacemaker from creating a heart rate appropriate for the body’s needs. In Hood’s case, his pacemaker stopped working entirely so his heart stopped beating.
“So basically I hadn’t passed out. I flatlined and actually died…One time, I was dead for 30 seconds,” Hood said. While there are various causes of Sick Sinus Syndrome, because Hood is fit and healthy without underlying issues, doctors believe his case is genetic.
While in the hospital, Hood had two more flat lining episodes. “After one of them, I woke up and was pretty disoriented and my nurse was trying to cut off my Kill Cliff shirt. I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ It’s one of my favorite shirts. So I took it off myself,” he said, laughing.
Lowering or re-racking jerks is a skill and it takes some practice to learn. The key is to use your body to absorb the force and momentum of the bar and once you've mastered this, it will actually help you improve your dip and drive for the jerk itself.
