7 Free Activities to do While in Madison

If you’re coming to Madison, WI for the 2017 CrossFit Games, chances are you’re probably spending a lot of money on travel, room, tickets, food, etc. So, here’s a list of some of some of the FREE things you can do while in town!
1. Olbrich Botanical Gardens
The botanical gardens is a beautiful place for a nice walk. It’s a pretty large area with lots of little trails to explore. Great spot for some nice photos. There is a paid portion inside (I think it’s butterflies) but the main gardens are free.
2. Monona Terrace Concerts on the Roof
The Monona Terrace is located just down the road from the Alliant Energy Center where the CrossFit Games events take place. Thursday nights there is free music/live band on top of the Monona Terrace where you can also grab a beer and brat.
3. Henry Vilas Zoo
Great with kids or without. They’ve made a lot of improvements over the last year or so. There is a park next to the zoo, and the lake across the street. There is a parking lot, but it’s small and ALWAYS full. Street parking is available around there, expect to walk a few blocks.
4. Wisconsin State Capitol
Free tours are offered daily. The Wisconsin Sate Capitol building looks very similar to the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
5. Museums
Several of Madison’s museums offer free admission like the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), Wisconsin Historical Museum, Wisconsin Veterans Museum, UW-Madison Geology Museum, and the Chazen Museum of Art.
6. University of Wisconsin Arboretum Trails
A 1,260 acre forest with lots of hiking and trails and a lot of access points throughout the city.
7. Beaches and Lakes
We are not on the ocean, nor are we on Lake Michigan, but there are still some nice beach areas and access to water/swimming around.
