Since its conception, CrossFit has always held strong ties to the military community. Every year on Memorial Day, hundreds of gyms across the country pay tribute to fallen soldiers with Murph, and every Veteran’s Day, even more join in to help support our returning heroes.

One big thing: This year, Team Red White and Blue has come together for the seventh year to raise money and awareness for the physical and mental health of veterans returning from combat. They hope to make this year their biggest year yet, bringing together close to 200 chapters to participate in the 2020 WOD for Warriors event.

The details so far: The workout will be held both in-person and online and participants can decide which they would like to do.

  • If they choose to participate in person, there are 192 chapters across the United States with over 200,000 members supporting the Team RWB organization. Athletes can find a chapter on the Team RWB website.
  • The in-person chapter locations will all be following proper COVID guidelines and restrictions to ensure the health and safety of the athletes.
  •  If they choose to participate online, they can do so on the Team RWB app.
  • Online athletes are also encouraged to gather up friends and family members to participate in the workout with them and add them to their team on the app.

The workout: Athletes can either choose to participate in the solo version of the workout or the partner workout.

  • Armistice Workout
  • 11 rounds, for time:
  • 11 Mountain Climbers
  • 11 Air Squats
  • 11 Hand Release Pushups
  • 11 Box Jump Burpees
  • 200 meter run
  • For an added challenge – wear a weighted vest
  • Armistice Partner Workout
  • 11 rounds, for time
  • 11 Mountain Climbers with partner plank hold
  • 11 Fireman’s Carry Back Squats
  • 11 Partner (leg hold) pushups
  • 11 Partner Jump-Over Burpees
  • 200 meter run – next round starts when both partners complete the run.

Athletes can find scaling options on the Team RWB website.

More than just a workout: While getting together with friends and family to get sweaty in support of a good cause is fun, this workout is more than just air squats and box jumps. The funds raised from participation in this event will go back towards making a meaningful impact in the lives of veterans.

  • “The cornerstone of the Team RWB mission is to enrich Veterans’ lives. We define enrichment as ‘creating quality relationships and experiences that contribute to life satisfaction and overall well-being,” the organization wrote in a study on the impact of its programs.
  • After joining Team RWB, 69% of Veterans reported that they felt they had more people in their lives to motivate them, while 73% said they felt they were more able to inspire others.
  • Moreover, 60% of veterans reported that they had more resources to turn to in the local community since joining Team RWB.
  • Finally, 61% of veterans who were part of Team RWB started exercising more frequently, 33% felt less anxious, 15% said they drank less alcohol, and most importantly, 61% of active Team RWB members said they “felt that they were ‘less down, depressed, or hopeless.’” according to a 2014 research study done by Team RWB.

Why it matters: With a global pandemic, it has become even more of a challenge for functional fitness affiliates to put together events like this for causes that matter. However, larger organizations with online capabilities are making this more and more possible. With virtual leaderboards and apps to track participants, people from across the country and around the globe can workout together in support of a common cause without leaving the comfort of their garage gym.
