There’s a void on top of the podium for the men at the CrossFit Games this year. Five time defending champion Mat Fraser has retired. The second place finisher from last years’ competition, Samuel Kwant, did not qualify for this year’s Games. Which leaves Justin Medeiros, at only 22-years-old as the highest finishing athlete (and only podium finisher) from last year who will be at the 2021 NOBULL CrossFit Games. Is he the one to beat? And if not, who is? Tommy and Brian go shot for shot debating if the ‘old guard’ or ‘new guard’ are more likely to occupy a majority of the podium positions this season.

Brian, the Old Guard: We’re considering this to be athletes who are at least 30-years-old and have competed in at least five Games prior to this year.

Tommy, the New Guard: These athletes must be 26-years-old or younger and have three years or less individual Games experience prior to this year.

  • Both analysts will select five men given the criteria and go back and forth discussing the likelihood and plausibility for each selection.
