This Bay Area Non-Profit Wants to Give Scholarships to Get You Fit

A Bay Area non-profit organization is on a mission to provide access to CrossFit gyms to those who might need financial assistance. Westside Athletes Association has created a new program that will provide access to CrossFit affiliates by removing the cost barrier.
One big thing: Traditional gyms have offered similar programs, often issuing challenges to people wanting to get in shape by a certain date. The Westside Athletes Association offers access to a supportive community and a different training style, removing the main factor — cost — that potentially keeps people from signing up.
The details: Those interested must meet three main requirements. They have to be at least 18 years old and must make less than $100,000 per year. Most importantly, they must reside in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- The non-profit’s first partner is CrossFit Potrero Hill. The affiliate is located in the Design District, near the California College of the Arts. Interested affiliates can apply to become a partner.
- Supporters can get involved regardless of location. The Westside Athletes Association accepts donations through PayPal and Venmo to help cover membership costs.
Why it matters: The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most expensive places in the country to live. With the median rent ranging from $2,600-4,100 based on apartment size, many residents may not have the ability to afford the average $75 fitness club membership, let alone potentially twice that amount for a CrossFit gym.
